With just one sentence, everything clicked for Leroy.
So the real reason he missed Rachel’s call for help… was Elise? His stepmother?
But why?
Why had he been drugged even in the previous life–on the night he married me?
He couldn’t make sense of it.
He gave a look, and the man who’d wet himself was dragged away by the bodyguards.
To the rest, Leroy gave orders to start investigating something else entirely.
He already had confirmation that I was married.

But he couldn’t bring himself to face me–not yet. Not after realizing he might’ve wrongly blamed me for so much.
Leroy sent someone to the hospital to check on my father. The report came back saying he had been cremated yester- day.
He couldn’t believe it.
“But I thought coma patients could survive without the ventilator?”
The doctor wiped the sweat off his forehead.
“Mr. Barrett’s case was very specific. He needed constant oxygen. Even a minute without the ventilator would’ve meant certain death.”
That hit Leroy like a bolt of lightning. He suddenly remembered that just days before Rachel’s death in his last life, she had insisted on conducting some science experiment.
She’d shut off the power in a private hospital ward.
Ten minutes without power and all the coma patients lost their ventilators.
Later, she cried in his arms, saying the experiment failed.
And on the list of the deceased… wasn’t my father one of them?
Leroy realized–he had made another huge mistake.
He called me again and again until the line went dead. The number had been deactivated.
Rachel asked him out to eat. He didn’t go. Instead, he just sat alone in my old room, turning over a photo they’d taken

“Why didn’t you ever ask to take a new one?”
He murmured to himself, then suddenly snapped out of it.
No matter what, Rachel was still innocent, wasn’t she?
He decided to go talk to her, but she wouldn’t answer any of his calls.
A terrible thought struck him. What if her heart problem was acting up?
He panicked and started searching the whole house until he passed by Elise’s room and stopped.
He heard voices from inside, it was Rachel and Elise.
“Mom, didn’t you have someone drug Leroy? So why hasn’t he touched me lately?”
“Rachel, I’ll ask him about it later.”
