I let out a cold laugh, finally finding my voice after struggling to speak.
“Gerald, tell me, all these years when you called me ‘Elly‘, were you really saying ‘Ailey‘?”
Gerald wept uncontrollably as he pressed his forehead against my hand. He cried so much that his tears drenched my fingers.
“I’m calling you! Only you, Hailey! Please, don’t go!”
With all my remaining strength, I pulled my hand away. I was bitterly amused that at least I had not been a complete fool all this time.
I closed my eyes and exhaled slowly. “Gerald, you owe me. I promised I’d make you repay it. Just wait for the ‘gift‘ I’ve prepared for you.”
My strength drained away with my final word.
Gerald still refused to give up on me. He desperately demanded that the ambulance rush me to the hospital for further resuscitation.
Only after seeing the hospital director’s head shake did his body finally give way and
collapse.
My body was sent for cremation while Gerald sat in the hallway. His eyes were vacant.
Aileen rushed in, looking frantic.
“So? Is she dead?”
Gerald stayed frozen. Aileen rushed to check with the staff. She only relaxed after getting
confirmation.
She rushed to Gerald’s side and helped him up. “Gerrie, why so glum? This worked out perfectly, didn’t it?

“After all these years, we can finally be together like when we were kids, just you and me.
“Hailey won’t get in our way anymore.”
Gerald stared at Aileen in disbelief. He could not comprehend how cold her words were.
“Be together?
“You really think we have a future? Aileen, this is premeditated murder. You’ll go to prison
for this.”
Aileen’s expression changed instantly. She could barely conceal her panic.

“What are you talking about? Your family has all the power in this city! As long as your dad
steps in, there’s no way I’d go to jail!”
Gerald let out a cold laugh as he looked at her like she was a fool.
“Help you? Why would my father help you? Hailey is the lawful daughter–in–law of the
Brown family. Do you really think he would ruin the family’s reputation for an outsider like
you?
“Let me put this bluntly. He probably doesn’t even know you exist. Get it now?”
Aileen stood frozen in place. She clutched his sleeve desperately.
“No, Gerrie! You can’t do this to me! If not for my sake, then at least think about the
contract!”
Gerald’s eyes reddened with regret at her words. He began slapping himself across the face repeatedly.
He had delayed making amends with me for that very contract. And he would never get the chance to appease me again.
“Forget that stupid contract! My wife is dead! None of this means anything now!”

“Stop with the heartbroken act. Don’t you dare use the contract as an excuse. Was it about the contract when you couldn’t get enough intimate moments with me in my bed?
“Gerrie, quit lying to yourself. She’s already dead. You’d better wise up and keep me happy. You’ve been head over heels for me for over a decade, right?”
She brought up the past, hoping to soften his resolve.
When they were just eight years old, they played hide–and–seek in the Brown family factory.
A fire broke out in the building where he was hiding. She rushed into the flames and saved
him.
That experience made him completely dependent on her afterward.
They lived together for ten years. When Aileen turned eighteen, the Smith family sent her abroad to gain prestige.
