Chapter 7
It did not matter anymore. I had only half a month left to live. Once Aileen brought back the confidential documents from the rival company and the contract was signed, he could
easily comfort her then.
After all, I was still his legal wife and the daughter–in–law of the Brown family. The maids would not dare to truly mistreat me.
At first, the maids hesitated to assign me heavy work. They just handed me a rag for
window–cleaning as a perfunctory task.
That changed when Aileen arrived with her maids. They dumped the trash from her room onto me and splashed dirty toilet water across the floor.
The other maids grew visibly uneasy. One of Aileen’s lackeys, who was flaunting her borrowed power, sneered, “What’re you staring at? This is an order from Mr. Brown. He said our young mistress demands spotlessness; not a single speck of dirt is allowed. So, get cleaning, Mrs. Brown.”
Aileen forced Penny to watch me be humiliated. Penny yelled, “Clean? Please! Your precious mistress doesn’t mind secondhand goods, does she? She didn’t care about cleanliness when sharing Gerald’s bed!”
A sharp slap echoed through the room, leaving a red handprint on Penny’s cheek.
Aileen, who was still unsatisfied, raised her hand to strike her again.
I struggled to stand and shield Penny. “Aileen, if you’re angry, take it out on me. What’s the point of targeting her?”
Aileen let out a mocking laugh and clapped. “How touching. What a beautiful sisterly bond!
Well, since you offered, you can take her punishment.”
Aileen’s maid slapped, punched, and kicked me. I endured it all.

They poured a bucket of cold water over me. My body convulsed violently, my heart seized with sharp pain, and my consciousness began to fade. I was on the verge of passing out.
Gerald’s arrival interrupted the harassment. He shoved several maids aside and demanded, “Have you all lost your minds? Who gave you the right to touch her?!”
The maids immediately turned to Aileen. “Ms. Aileen ordered us to do this! Please, Mr. Brown, don’t fire us!”
Aileen sneered and glared at them. “Yeah, right. You only acted because you thought you had power! Now, you’re blaming me?”
Gerald could no longer hold back. Furious, he gripped Aileen’s wrist. “I warned you she was off–limits.”
Aileen faltered for a second before regaining her composure. “Oh, please. I wasn’t even going to bother with her. But she literally begged me to hit her. Shouldn’t I oblige?”
Gerald froze momentarily before turning to me. However, by then, I had already collapsed on the floor. My eyelids were too heavy to lift.
“Call an ambulance! Now!”
Gerald panicked. His voice trembled as he shouted.
Aileen stared at Gerald in disbelief. “What are you doing? If she dies, we’ll finally be free of her. This is good news!
“Let’s announce our relationship today!”
Gerald shoved her aside, swept me into his arms, and ran toward the waiting ambulance.
In the ambulance, through my fading consciousness, I heard Gerald sobbing beside me.
The doctor pressed the defibrillator against my chest repeatedly, but my pulse kept weakening on the monitor.
Gerald clutched my hand tightly, as if afraid I might slip away.

“Elly, don’t leave me. Just hold on a little longer, okay?
“I messed up. It’s all my fault. Let me explain. None of this is what you think!”
