Chapter 5
Aileen’s voice echoed through the hallway. She said, “Gerrie, stop blaming Hailey because
of me. This is all my fault.”
Uncharacteristically, Gerald ignored her. His piercing gaze remained fixed on me. “Hailey, explain yourself. How could you have had a miscarriage? Weren’t you infertile?”
I met his eyes with a cold laugh. “You want to know how I miscarried? Ask your precious
Aileen over there.”
Aileen’s face froze at my words. She shrank back nervously when Gerald turned to her.
“What miscarriage? Gerrie, don’t listen to her lies! She must be feeling guilty for killing our baby, so she’s making up stories to save herself!”
Gerald paused. Then his expression hardened again. “You’re lying! The doctor just said you were never pregnant in the first place! He said you’ve been taking birth control! Aileen! How could I believe anything that you say?!”
Aileen seemed caught off guard. Shock flashed across her face before she could hide it.
In a flash, she burst into theatrical tears and rushed to cling to his arm. “Gerrie, please let
me explain! I-”
Gerald shoved her away without looking. “Enough!”
Aileen wiped her tears and dropped to her knees with a loud thud.
“Fine, Gerrie! Let’s say this was my fault! But have you forgotten who pulled you out of that burning building when we were kids? Do you realize what I’ve gone through all these years working undercover for you?
“I still have those confidential documents. The deal isn’t finalized yet.
“Are you really going to treat me like this over something so small?”

Gerald’s clenched fists suddenly relaxed. He rushed forward to help her up.
“Gerrie, if you won’t forgive me… then I’ll just kill myself!”

After she said that, she turned and slammed her head against the doorframe. A dull thud sounded as blood trickled from her forehead, and she collapsed to the floor.
“Gerrie… there’s only ever been you. If you care about Hailey, just let me die. You’ll be happier without me.”
Gerald frantically held her in his arms. He shouted repeatedly, “Where are the doctors? Someone help! If anything happens to Ailey, I’ll have this hospital shut down!
“It’s okay, Ailey. You’ve always been the only one for me. I’m not angry. You must hold on!”
Penny tugged at my sleeve. “Hailey, let’s leave Mr. Brown’s house. He doesn’t love you, not at all. I can’t watch you suffer under Aileen’s cruelty anymore.”
I nodded silently. We had shared ten years of friendship, seven years of romance, and three years of marriage. Even then, it seemed like I had never really known him.
Those passionate promises were never meant for me. The year Aileen went abroad, he
confessed to me out of nowhere.
I thought his stubborn mind had finally been opened, only to realize I was just Aileen’s substitute.
I was done. It was time to end everything. After all the pain he caused, I deserved rest.
I never imagined that Gerald could be this obsessive.
He had me dragged back to his home, locked me in a guest room, and barred me from the courtyard.
I could not endure that life. I tried to end it multiple times, but he stopped me every time.
“Hailey, you don’t get to die without my say!”

Later, he let Penny visit to placate me. Instead of comfort, it became the start of my nightmare.
