Chapter 7
Nathan’s eyes were bloodshot, his phone clenched in a death grip. He’d clearly seen the statement.
I stared at him coldly.
“You know damn well what this is about.”
“I gave you a chance. I explicitly told you that was your last chance.”
“And what did you do? For Olivia’s sake, you trampled all over my trust and stabbed me in the back!”
I pulled out divorce papers I’d already prepared from my drawer and tossed them in front of him.
“I, Valerie Carter, never give second chances.”
“There’s nothing left to discuss. Sign the papers.”
Nathan stared at the divorce agreement, the anger on his face gradually replaced by panic and disbelief.
He snatched the papers from the desk and violently tore them to shreds.
“I’m not signing shit!”
“Divorce isn’t some temper tantrum, Valerie. Time to drop the spoiled princess act.”
“Here’s what’s going to happen–you’re going to retract that divorce announcement right now, and we’ll both cool
off and talk about this later.”
Looking at his attitude, I could only find it darkly amusing.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Once you make a choice, you deal with the consequences.
I spoke icily:
“I will not retract the announcement, and we are absolutely finished.”
“I’ll have new papers drawn up. If you refuse to sign, I have no problem making sure you and your precious Olivia never work in this industry again.”
“Valerie! You wouldn’t dare!”
Nathan has always placed his career above everything.
All these years under my protection, he’d never had to face threats like this.
Anger took him over once more.

“I will NOT sign those papers! And I will NOT abandon Olivia! Game on!”
He threw those words at me and stormed out without looking back.
I stared at the shredded papers scattered across the floor, my expression completely calm.
Nathan, you brought this on yourself.
Deep down, Nathan was still that award–winning director who refused to admit defeat.
Backed into a corner, his competitive streak only flared stronger.
He probably thought that with his talent and reputation, he could make it big without me.
He began liquidating all the savings he’d accumulated over the years, even mortgaging several properties he owned.
He needed to raise capital to personally finance, write, and produce a film with one clear goal–launching Olivia’s
career.
Reality, however, quickly slapped him in the face.
News of our divorce and that damning statement with irrefutable evidence had spread like wildfire throughout the industry.
No one would touch his projects.
Nathan reached out to several top screenwriters he’d previously worked well with, only to be told they were either booked solid or receive polite rejections.
The cinematographer he’d set his heart on, who had been enthusiastic during earlier talks, now wouldn’t even
answer his calls.
Even crew members who used to kiss his ass and call him “Director Fuller” with saccharine sweetness were now making excuses to avoid working with him.
Overnight, the entire industry seemed to slam its doors in his face.
A mutual friend called to update me.
He mentioned Nathan wasn’t doing well–investors were pulling out, and he was desperately trying to borrow money from anyone who would listen.
I just laughed softly. “Is that so? And why should I care?”
My friend fell silent for a moment, then dropped the subject.
After being stonewalled by the industry, Nathan placed his last hopes on his parents.
He probably assumed that with their years of accumulated connections and relationships, they could find willing supporters during his time of need.

Once again, he was sorely disappointed.
His parents began reaching out to friends they frequently socialized with, people who seemed close, hoping to secure some financial backing for their son’s project.
Instead, they discovered that these so–called “old friends” had mostly maintained their warm relationships with the Fuller family because of the Carter name–because of me.
Now that Nathan and I had split, they wanted nothing to do with him.
They either directly declined his parents‘ calls or offered vague, noncommittal responses with flimsy excuses.
Each rejection, each cold shoulder, gave Nathan his first real taste of the power of capital and the brutality of reality.
Without my support, even with his considerable talent, he couldn’t move an inch forward.
The media continued reporting on Nathan’s predicament. The once–celebrated director was now a pathetic figure, the subject of industry gossip.
I remained completely indifferent to all of it.
My energy was fully dedicated to producing the company’s new film project.
Without Nathan’s interference and all that messy drama, everything was progressing smoothly.
In fact, things were going even more smoothly than I’d anticipated.
But what I never expected was that a month later, news about Nathan migrated from the entertainment section to
general news.
