Chapter 5
To prove his commitment, he deleted all of Olivia’s contact information right in front of me.
He reassigned her to other agents within the company.
After playing house husband for a week, I finally decided–after careful consideration–to let him direct the new
film.
Because I knew that, like me, he had poured his heart and soul into this screenplay.
We both threw ourselves back into the project preparations.
Our relationship gradually improved.
I never actively tried to sabotage Olivia’s career.
A minor role wasn’t worth wasting my energy on.
But this industry is full of shrewd players. Some things happen without explicit orders–people just know what side
to take.
Without Nathan’s preferential treatment and resources, Olivia struggled to gain traction in the industry and gradually faded from view.
I redirected all my focus to filming our new project.
Several months later, we wrapped production.
The wrap party and press conference were scheduled at The Polo Lounge.
As the creative leads, Nathan and I naturally had to attend together.
Just as we were about to enter the venue, his phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
He frowned and declined the call, but whoever was calling proved persistent, calling again and again.
After hanging up over a dozen times, just as he was about to block the number…
The caller sent a text with a photo attachment.
Nathan opened it with an annoyed expression.
In an instant, his face completely transformed.
“I need to handle something urgent. You go ahead without me.”

Before I could ask anything, he had disappeared around the corner of the hallway.
With Nathan gone, I had no choice but to attend the press conference alone.
I faced countless cameras by myself, expertly fielding questions about the film.
Right in the middle of sharing amusing anecdotes about working with the director…
A sudden commotion erupted among the reporters.
A gossip columnist in the front row raised his phone high, jumping in with a question:
“Ms. Carter! Your husband just posted on Instagram supporting actress Olivia Reed and accusing someone of deliberately sabotaging her career. Any comment?”
“Is his sudden departure related to this issue?”
The room exploded like a powder keg.
All cameras instantly focused on me, flashbulbs nearly blinding me.
“Ms. Carter, is it true that Olivia was not only shelved by your company but driven to attempt suicide?”
“Ms. Carter, are there instances of abuse or financial exploitation of talent at your company?”
“Ms. Carter, are you and Director Fuller having marital problems?”
My ears were flooded with chaotic questions.
Completely blindsided, I hastily ended the press conference.
Back in the green room, I checked my phone and saw that Nathan had posted an official statement from his verified
account.
[Effective immediately, I am withdrawing from all Carter Entertainment projects to establish my own independent studio.]
In his lengthy statement, he condemned the company’s alleged mistreatment and persecution of Olivia.
He detailed Olivia’s struggles and talents, his words dripping with sympathy and fierce protection.
He claimed he couldn’t stand by while a brilliant young actress’s career was destroyed.
So he’d decided to use all his resources to support Olivia’s career.
Olivia, now at the center of this media storm, had reposted his statement with her own caption:
[After the storm, there’s always a rainbow.]
[With you by my side, no matter how rough the path ahead, I’ll keep pushing forward.]

She included a photo of herself with Nathan.
Reading through the explosion of comments beneath their posts, I felt an icy chill rising from deep within me.
The project I had meticulously crafted for three years–right at the moment of its completion and impending release–had been thrust into a media firestorm by the very husband I had helped build up, all for another woman.
Suppressing my rage, I immediately called Nathan.
“Care to explain yourself?”
On the other end, his voice was distant and cold:
“Valerie, Olivia nearly died!”
“If I hadn’t gotten there in time, she would have jumped off that bridge!”
“She works so hard, yet she’s been systematically crushed by the company just because you can’t stand her!”
“I won’t watch her be destroyed! I have to help her!”
“Help her?”
Hearing this, I laughed through sudden tears:
“And your way of helping her is by destroying me? Is that it?”
“You didn’t verify anything before posting that garbage smearing me and the company.”
“Did you even think about the consequences of what you’ve done?!”
“I don’t give a damn about consequences anymore! You were the bully first! You ruined her! I HAVE to protect her!”
He hung up on me.
Listening to the dial tone, whatever warmth I had left for him extinguished completely.
I hurled my phone against the floor, the screen shattering instantly.
Our wedding photo–the two of us in formal attire–fractured along with the glass.
Fine. Perfect.
Nathan Fuller, for some newcomer, you’re willing to slander me and push me to the edge.
Since you’ve chosen to position yourself as my enemy…
Don’t blame me for showing no mercy!
