Chapter 8
“Ms. Grace, your ex–husband has filed theft charges against you. We need you to come down to the station for questioning.”
I showed up at the local precinct completely baffled.
And there was Sebastian, looking like absolute hell with days of stubble covering his face.
He was staring at me like a desperate addict getting his fix.
“Sorry, but Tannor’s got you locked down tighter than Fort Knox–this was the only way I could get to
you.”
“The charges are complete bullshit–I made the whole thing up. The one who belongs behind bars is
Vivian!”
Sebastian’s eyes were bloodshot, practically glowing with rage.
“After my company tanked, I tried selling my parents‘ stuff to cover the debts. That’s when I discovered… Vivian had already pawned everything years ago!”
“Hell, even her asthma attacks were all an act!”
“When I… when my health issues came back and I went to the doctor, he told me I’m basically sterile now. Turns out for three fucking years, Vivian was slipping me fertility–killing drugs every single day–just because she can’t have kids, she wanted to make sure I couldn’t either!”
Sebastian actually broke down crying.
With shaking hands, he pulled up security footage on his phone.
Julia, Jesus, I’m so sorry. I only saw this when I was building a case against Vivian…”
In the grainy video, he was carrying Vivian out while I collapsed behind them, clutching my belly as blood spread across the floor.
The footage showed me frantically trying to call someone–call after call going to voicemail–before finally dialing 911 and crawling to unlock the door for the paramedics.

A dark trail of blood followed me across the room.
The video ended abruptly.
Sebastian’s voice cracked completely: “We… we lost a baby three years ago…”
Suddenly he lunged forward, trying to grab my hands, his eyes wild with insane hope: “So those three kids of yours… there’s gotta be a chance they’re mi-”
An officer yanked him back.
I recoiled, completely disgusted, cutting him off.
“Absolutely not.”
I frowned and made myself crystal clear.
“Sebastian, this is the last time you’ll ever see me.”
As I headed for the door, Sebastian screamed after me.
“Everyone knows Tannor’s a stone–cold killer! How the hell could you be happy with a guy like that?”
I didn’t dignify Sebastian’s question with an answer.
But I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about the day I met Matthew.
Right after my divorce, I was clutching my mom’s old letter, heading to D.C. to track down someone
she used to know.
But I got stuck at the gates of some heavily secured government facility.
That’s when this black sedan came rolling up through the slush.
The tinted window rolled down, revealing a face half–hidden under a military cap–sharp jawline
and the warmest smile I’d ever seen.
“Excuse me, miss–you look like you could use some help.”
That first meeting had me convinced for months that Matthew was just some sweet, helpful guy in
uniform.

Took me a while to learn his reputation.
They call him “The Reaper” for a reason.
He only smiles like that for me,
Watching the unconscious joy lighting up my whole face, Sebastian just stared like he was seeing a ghost.
He reached out instinctively, then his hand fell back, trembling.
Julia used to look at him exactly like that.
If he hadn’t been such a complete moron, they could’ve had everything together.
The thought hit him like a sledgehammer to the chest.
Sebastian couldn’t hold it together anymore and dropped to his knees.
“I fucked everything up… I should be dead!”
The sound of him beating himself up mixed with his broken sobbing filled the room.
I wasn’t sticking around for his pity party–finished my statement and got out of there fast.
But I walked right past Vivian being dragged in by two officers.
She looked completely unhinged, hair wild, makeup smeared everywhere.
The second she spotted me, her face lit up like Christmas morning.
She actually tried to break free and rush me.
Julia! I know I messed up bad!”
‘You always had a soft spot for me!”
‘Please, you gotta help me! Just ask Mr. Tannor to-”
I didn’t even acknowledge her existence as I walked past.
A year later, I was back volunteering in that little Maine town.

Chapter 8
After twelve months of development funding, the place was completely transformed.
Fresh asphalt roads, a brand–new school building, perfect cell reception.
That afternoon I was stretched out under a tree, soaking up the sunshine.
Across the field, Lily was running around with my three kids while a little white dog chased them all.
That’s when my phone rang–unknown number.
After the screech of tires, I heard confused shouting, then someone breathing hard.
I said “hello” a few times and was about to hang up.
Then this broken, raspy voice came through the speaker, like someone barely hanging on.
“Julia… I loved you… maybe next time around…”
I ended the call immediately.
Found out later that was Sebastian’s final phone call.
While serving time, Vivian actually did develop real asthma. During medical release, she got hit by a
car.
Sebastian was behind the wheel.
They both died at the scene.
I put my phone away just as the kids started whooping and hollering in the distance.
I looked up to see Matthew walking toward me through the golden afternoon light, three little bodies bouncing around him like puppies.
“Hey gorgeous, your ride’s here!”
“Mommy! Daddy came to get us!”
I burst out laughing and waved back.
Grabbing my skirt, I ran straight into their arms.
