Chapter 7
He looked like he’d been camping out there forever, emerging from the long shadows of the stairwell with his face all lit up.
“Julia… I’ve been waiting out here for three damn nights just to catch you!”
When I tried to sidestep around him, he frantically jumped in front of me.
“Look, I’m sorry about the bracelet thing–I totally screwed up, but…”
His voice suddenly got all worked up and whiny.
“Julia! How can you be such a cold bitch?”
“We had a deal about getting back together! Why’d you flip on me so fast? You went and had babies with him…”
His tone turned nasty and bitter.
“I never actually wanted to divorce you for real. After you bailed, I spent every single day waiting for you to come crawling back.”
“Until that time when… I was sick as hell, practically dying and calling your name, and Vivian kept trying to call you. You just kept hanging up on us!”
“That’s when I decided that if you ever showed your face again, I’d make you regret it…”
I stared at him like he’d lost his mind.
“I never got any damn calls.”
Sebastian went white as a sheet as the pieces clicked together, spitting out through gritted teeth:
“That… fucking… bitch!”
Next thing I know, he’s grabbing my wrist all desperate and pathetic.
“Julia, Jesus, I’m sorry–I was such a moron…”

“Now that we got this shit sorted out, just dump Tannor and let’s get back together, yeah? I don’t give a crap that you’ve got kids…”
I smiled sweetly and yanked my hand away, adding the cherry on top.
“Actually, I should send Vivian a thank–you card. Even if I had gotten those calls, I would’ve blocked your ass anyway.”
Sebastian just stood there with his mouth hanging open.
I was totally over this walk and headed back inside, but Sebastian’s pathetic voice followed me.
“Why do you hate my guts so much? We’ve known each other since we were kids–you used to promise you’d never leave me…”
I sighed and stopped walking.
“You’ve got it backwards. I don’t hate you anymore. Don’t love you either. You’re basically just some random creep on the street to me now.”
I paused, then twisted the knife a little deeper.
“The gross, annoying kind that women cross the street to avoid.”
I booked it out of there.
But then I spotted another figure lurking in the shadows.
Matthew had been standing there the whole time–God knows how much he’d overheard.
He walked over and took my hand.
“Come on, baby. Let’s get out of here.”
I smiled and laced my fingers through his.
Watching me and Matthew walk away together like some perfect couple, Sebastian looked like
someone had just ripped his heart out with their bare hands.
He went full psycho and chased after us.
“Mr. Tannor! You know she’s used goods, right? Been married before–total damaged merchandise!”

Then he screamed at me.
“Julia! You gotta wake up–nobody’s gonna really want you except me! I’m the only one who’s known you since forever!”
Matthew’s fist slammed into Sebastian’s face so hard it sounded like a gunshot.
Sebastian went flying backwards, hitting the pavement and flopping around like roadkill.
Matthew loomed over him with pure hatred in his eyes.
“Fuck off. Say another word and I’ll bury you right here.”
Walking back, Matthew didn’t say shit, just held my hand in a death grip with his whole jaw tight as
steel.
I couldn’t help poking his cheek.
That’s when I noticed his eyes were actually watery.
He suddenly stopped and crushed me against his chest, holding me so tight I thought my ribs might
crack.
“I fucking hate that I didn’t find you sooner, that I let that worthless piece of shit hurt you!”
I was really touched, but smooshed against his chest, I was running out of air.
“Uh… babe, I appreciate the sentiment, but maybe ease up before you accidentally murder me?”
Matthew immediately loosened his grip, giving me this helpless grin.
“You’re such a smartass!”
After that night, Sebastian vanished completely.
Same with Vivian and all those corporate assholes–they never showed their faces in town again.
Wasn’t until I caught the news later that I found out the feds had shut down all their companies.
When my volunteer stint ended, I headed back to New York.
Some days I’d be home with the kids, other days I’d grab my backpack and hiking gear to disappear

Life was chill and pretty damn sweet.
Then one day, my phone rang with a number I didn’t recognise
