Chapter 4
Mr. Lewis burst through the door, throwing himself between us and them.
This sweet old guy who usually just smiled and nodded was now red in the face with pure rage.
“I’ve known Lily since she was in diapers! I know exactly what kind of kid she is!”
“This girl’s been an orphan her whole life–you drag her to jail over some made–up bullshit, how’s she supposed to show her face at school? In this town?!”
The suits exchanged looks, sneering.
“Well that explains it–little trash with no parents to teach her not to steal.”
‘You’re interfering with justice, old man. Feeling guilty? Birds of a feather, I guess. This whole shithole isn’t worth our money anyway.”
Mr. Lewis was shaking with fury, jabbing his finger at the door.
‘Get the hell out! We don’t want your dirty money!”
The businessmen’s faces went dark–nobody expected this doormat to actually fight back.
Now they were really pissed.
One of them snapped his fingers and suddenly their muscle rushed Mr. Lewis, body–slamming him against the wall.
The head suit strolled over and slapped Mr. Lewis’s face condescendingly.
One phone call from me and I’ll shut down not just this brat, but your whole pathetic school!”
The goons started moving toward us.
grabbed Lily and backed us into the corner.
Lily was finally crying:
I’m so sorry, Ms. Grace… I just wanted to give the lady back her purse…”

Chapter 4
I held her tight: “Baby, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
Staring at all their smug, twisted faces, I was beyond furious.
I looked them dead in the eye.
“I’m Matthew Tannor’s wife. You touch me or this child, you’re fucking with the entire Tannor
family!”
My husband’s name carries serious weight, but I hate name–dropping–hell, I keep my huge–ass wedding ring locked away most of the time.
First time I’ve ever had to pull the “I’m a Tannor” card.
The second Matthew’s name left my lips, you could hear a pin drop.
Everyone’s expression changed completely.
Then they all lost their shit laughing.
One guy was literally wiping tears from his eyes.
“Mr. Walker, is your ex–wife completely nuts?”
‘Bitch, you’re not even worthy to breathe Matthew Tannor’s name! Claiming to be his wife–you trying to get yourself killed?”
‘This psycho’s gonna get us all murdered!”
Another one cackled.
‘Perfect timing though–Mr. Tannor’s rolling up any minute to surprise his wife. You can kiss his ass
ind beg for mercy in person.”
Sebastian stared at me like I was dog shit on his shoe.
Julia, before you lie your way out of this, could you engage what’s left of your brain? You’re a
ised–up divorcee pretending to be Mrs. Tannor?”
Jesus Christ, I actually thought about taking you back for old times‘ sake!”
totally ignored Sebastian, my whole face lighting up: “My husband’s coming?”

Chapter 4
CRACK-
A brutal slap sent my head spinning.
Stars exploded in my vision, blood immediately streaming from my split lip.
Vivian flexed her fingers and backhanded me again.
“You worthless cunt! Who said you could call him that?”
Her crocodile tears were long gone–nothing but pure hatred in her eyes.
“Sebastian’s about to be Mr. Tannor’s golden boy! If you fuck up his reputation, I’ll end you!”
She nodded at the bodyguards, who immediately tackled me to the ground.
Vivian ripped my emerald bracelet off and slapped it on her own wrist, grinning like she’d won the
lottery.
Then she ground her heel into my hand, and I bit back a scream.
Suddenly, tires screeched outside.
“Holy shit, Mr. Tannor’s here!” someone at the window yelled, their voice instantly switching to ass–kissing mode.
Three black government SUVs with federal plates pulled up. The middle door opened.
The man who stepped out looked like a movie star–ridiculously handsome in his military dress uniform, commanding respect just by existing. His security detail flanked him as he marched straight toward our building.
