Chapter 6
That night, my escape plan completely fell apart.
Mom caught me red–handed as I was secretly dragging my luggage toward the door.
What followed was a nightmarish beating.
Dad wasn’t home–meaning Mom’s rage was completely unchecked.
She grabbed anything within reach, swinging wildly like a maniac, her screams tearing through the air, as fierce as wailing ghosts:
“Why the fuck won’t you just die?! Die! Just die already!”
Her face was so twisted it was barely recognizable, no trace of her usual elegance and dignity as a piano teacher.
She shrieked:
“I should have aborted you, you waste!”
I lay on the cold floor, watching the ceiling spin in circles, a bone–deep tearing pain from the wound on my chest.
Physical pain flooded my consciousness like a tide, my awareness gradually dissolving until my brain simply shut
down.
The nightmarish violence and screaming woke my sisters up.
They appeared at the top of the stairs, watching everything with expressionless faces, their eyes chillingly
ndifferent.
Like every time before, they didn’t help, didn’t call for help.
After all these years, I’d long stopped expecting anything.
laving endured countless nights like this, I was completely exhausted.
his time, I didn’t scream, didn’t struggle.
just… gave up.
Mom,” I said, blood at the corner of my mouth, my voice so low it was barely audible, “go ahead… end this.”
flicker of surprise crossed her face. But quickly, those cold eyes returned to their deathly stillness.
Darkness began slowly creeping in from the edges of my vision, and I heard countless voices in my ears, cheering
er on wildly:

Chapter 6
“Yes, kill her! Don’t stop! Kill her!”
I knew this was probably my end-
This hellish life, I was finally going to exit the stage.
Death had to be better than living.
Then I woke up.
I found myself lying in an unfamiliar room, my body full of tubes and needles.
Great, I was still alive. How… “lucky.”
Through the haze, I noticed a uniformed woman sitting by the bed, looking down at her phone.
Seeing me open my eyes, she immediately put the phone away.
“Hi,” her voice was surprisingly gentle, contrasting sharply with the badge on her chest.
“You’re safe now. No one will hurt you anymore. I’m FBI Officer Whitesmith. Can I ask you a few questions?”
I nodded weakly.
“How did I end up here?”
Officer Whitesmith’s expression softened:
‘Your next–door neighbor called the police, said they heard you screaming. We investigated the scene and took your nother away.”
She exhaled deeply.
The paramedics said if we’d arrived twenty minutes later, we’d be investigating a homicide.”
tried to smile, but my split lips made me wince in pain.
his stranger had given me more warmth in just a few minutes than my family had in years.
Why didn’t you call the police before?” she asked.
Memories flooded back like a tide. I smiled bitterly, my ribs aching as if they might break.
I did.”
But it was all useless. No one was willing to testify to the truth. Everyone wanted her to get rid of me…”

Chapter 6
I told her about all those years of seeking help from my grandparents. After watching those pictures, their attitude toward me completely changed–they all wished I’d drop dead on the spot.
And Noah, my ex–boyfriend. After looking at those pictures, he dumped me without hesitation, even told Mom to just
kill me, then moved to another state.
Finally, I’d tried to save myself. The result? Completely useless.
As Whitesmith listened, her face kept flashing disbelief, anger, and deep sadness.
When I finished, she gripped my hand.
“Listen, Daphne, I promise justice will come this time.”
Before leaving, she added:
“Off the record, I’ll pull some strings so you can personally hear her confession. You should hear the truth yourself.”
A few days later, a young officer hurriedly brought me a tablet with a pictures file playing on the screen.
“Officer Whitesmith told you to take this,” he said awkwardly, then practically ran away.
I pressed play.
But what appeared on the screen was far from the truth Officer Whitesmith had promised to give me.
