“No!” Jack Harris hurried into the room, knocking over a bowl of porridge he had prepared in his rush. “What’s done is done. Don’t think too much about it. The doctor said your emotions are still unstable. You should go back and
rest.”
“But your girlfriend lost her legs because of me. I feel guilty. How can I make it up to her?” Rachel Moore said, with a pitiful tone.
“I’ll take care of this. I’m planning to marry Lily. Rachel, you should go back now,” Jack said as he helped Rachel up, his demeanor toward her starkly different from the gentle tone he used with me.
That was when I realized–Jack, though gentle, had always seemed distant, as if there were an invisible barrier between us, making everything feel unreal.
But now, facing Rachel, Jack’s kindness was genuine, his eyes so soft they could almost drip with tenderness. He was terrified of her being hurt in any way.
How foolish I had been, unable to distinguish between deceit and true affection.
“Get away from me, stop being so affectionate in front of me, you scum and trash,” I coldly snapped.
“How can you say that about Rachel? Lily, I don’t care what you say about me, but you can’t speak ill of Rachel. Apologize now.”
“I’ll apologize to your father, not to you. You two are so shameless. She hit me, and I lost my legs! Why should I apologize to her?”
“What kind of delusion are you living in?”
“I really am going to call the police!”
But it wasn’t as simple as I thought.
First of all, I couldn’t leave the hospital with my crippled legs.
I couldn’t find my old phone, and Jack hadn’t bought me a new one.
I asked the medical staff for help to call the police, but this was a private hospital, and it seemed like they had all received warnings from Jack. They ignored my requests to report the crime, only attending to necessary medical
checks.
I felt trapped in a cage I couldn’t escape from, with no way out. All I could do was wait.
Days passed, and then Jack pushed me in a wheelchair to the downstairs garden to get some sun. But midway, Rachel called him away. That was when I saw my opportunity. I borrowed a phone from a passerby and called the

police.
“Hello, 911? I want to report a crime.”
“Someone deliberately hit me with a car. My legs have been broken!”
The police arrived quickly.
After taking my statement, Jack showed up out of nowhere.
He apologized to the officers, saying, “Sorry for wasting everyone’s time. My girlfriend is having a hard time accepting the loss of her legs. She’s been emotionally unstable and has been imagining things, thinking she was deliberately harmed.”
“That’s not true,” I denied forcefully. “Officer, I’m fully aware of what’s happening. The pain from my legs is enough to keep me conscious. You can check the surveillance footage at C Orange Plaza!”
I even mentioned Rachel’s car’s license plate number.
Seeing that I was persistent, Jack stopped trying to stop me.
I thought maybe he had come to his senses or perhaps felt a tinge of guilt.
But I was too naive.
The police quickly updated me.
“The surveillance cameras at the corner of C Orange Plaza were broken last week, and they were only replaced yesterday.”
“As for the red car you mentioned, we checked the registration under Rachel Moore’s name, but she doesn’t own that vehicle.”
“I’m sorry to inform you, but there’s no evidence to support your claims.”
The officer gave me a sympathetic look.
It was the middle of June, yet I felt as if I were trapped in a frigid, thousand–year–old ice cave, the chill seeping deep into my bones.
So that’s how they handled it.
They had destroyed all the evidence. Jack, you really know how to lower the bar.
