Chapter 3
My cold, indifferent demeanor scared away many of my suitors, but not Jack Harris. No matter how much I rejected him, he would smile gently and say, “It’s okay, I can wait.”
Every day, without fail, he would stand at the dance studio holding a bouquet of lilies, waiting for me.
“Lily, you seem like you have thorns all over you, but inside, you’re the softest. I know that because of your past experiences, you don’t understand what love is, nor how to express it. Let me teach you.”
How did I agree? Well, Jack wasn’t wrong. I was someone who could be easily softened.
The night before our first date, a heavy storm began to pour.
I didn’t have an umbrella, and I couldn’t get a cab. Somehow, Jack appeared in front of me, bent down, and in his usual gentle tone said, “Come, let me carry you. Your legs were meant to stand on stage. They need to be protected.”
It was because of those words that I agreed to Jack’s pursuit.
After we became a couple, Jack did exactly as he promised. Slowly, his gentle demeanor pried open the doors of my heart.
Gradually, a smile returned to my face.
He would massage my tired legs after long hours of practice, buy me the prettiest dance costumes, and even fight for tickets to performances by my favorite dancers…
But one month ago, at a party with his friends, someone casually mentioned that Jack’s ex–girlfriend, Rachel Moore, was coming back.
That was the first time I saw Jack’s face harden into an expression of indifference, so different from the usual
warmth he showed me.
It was also the first time I met Rachel. She walked in wearing a bold red dress, confident and bold, her eyes scanning me from head to toe with a hint of disdain. “How did Jack ever fall for someone like you?” she sneered.
“Do you believe me? I snap my fingers, and Jack will come running back to me like a little dog.”
I felt bored and was certain that Jack would never act that way.
Indeed, during that month, Jack continued to treat me just like before.
But now I realized how horribly wrong I had been!
All his kindness, all his love–it was a lie!

The door to my room suddenly swung open.
“Little sister, how are your legs doing?”
Rachel Moore walked in, holding an exquisite cake box in her hands.
“Oh, sorry, I almost forgot you lost your legs,”
“I was right, wasn’t 12 As long as I want it, Jack will come running back to me like a little dog.”
“Look, it was me who hit you, but what of it?”
Rachel leaned down and whispered in my ear, “Who told you to steal that spot at the dance academy from my
cousin?”
“Losing your legs was just a small lesson front our family,”
So it was because of the dance academy spot!
How could there be such shameless people in this world!
I was so furious I wanted to slap Rachel, but before I could, she slapped me across the face instead.
“Aren’t you going to behave yourself now that you’re crippled?” she taunted.
Suddenly, her expression changed, and she quickly knelt on the floor.
“I’m sorry, I was wrong. I didn’t mean it. If hurting my leg will make you feel better, I’ll do it!”
With that, I didn’t know when, but she had picked up a fruit knife and was about to stab it into her own leg!
