Chapter 7
The guests‘ gossip reached Cassidy’s ears clearly.
‘I was in college with Gabriel and Natalie. Back then, his love for her was legendary,” a well–dressed man lowered his voice. “He nearly proposed right after graduation.”
‘No wonder!” someone exclaimed in realization. “A first love will always be a first love. Even without the title of wife, she’ll always be the most important person.”
‘Some women will do anything to marry into wealth,” someone glanced disdainfully at Cassidy. “But what’s the point? Have children? Still can’t win her husband’s heart. Mark my words–she’ll end up alone and miserable.”
Cassidy listened silently, her heart feeling encased in thick ice–heavy but no longer painful.
She took a deep breath and turned toward the elevator.
Just as the doors were about to close, a hand suddenly reached in.
Natalie glided in on her stiletto heels, her crimson lips curved in a confident smile.
“The divorce cooling–off period ends in three days,” she looked directly into Cassidy’s eyes. “You’ll keep your promise to leave, won’t you?”
Cassidy pressed the button for the first floor: “Of course.”
“Trust me, I can’t wait to get the hell out of here faster than anyone.”
Natalie finally displayed a satisfied smile: “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of ‘your‘ family.”
“After all, Gabriel and the children never liked you anyway. They’ll forget you soon enough.”
The elevator descended slowly, and Cassidy didn’t respond.
Suddenly-
BOOM!
A thunderous noise shook the elevator violently, plunging it into darkness.
“Aaah!” Natalie screamed, frantically pulling out her phone. “Gabriel! Help! The elevator’s malfunctioning!”
Cassidy slammed hard against the wall, her forehead exploding with pain, warm liquid trickling down her cheek.
After what seemed like an eternity, chaotic footsteps sounded outside.

Chapter 7
“Is anyone in there alright?” A rescue worker’s voice came through the elevator doors.
“Help us!” Natalie pounded on the doors. “My leg is trapped!”
The sound of metal being pried open pierced the air, and a blinding light shone through.
The rescue worker assessed the situation, his expression grave: “Mr. Westbrook, both ladies‘ legs are trapped by the deformed door. The situation is critical–we can only rescue one person first. Who should we save?”
Through her blurry vision, Cassidy saw Gabriel standing behind the rescuer with both children.
His gaze fell on Natalie without a moment’s hesitation: “Save Natalie.”
‘Save Auntie Natalie first!” Ethan and Emma cried, tugging at the rescuer’s sleeve. “Hurry!”
The rescuer frowned: “Mr. Westbrook, the other lady’s injuries are more severe. We strongly recommend saving her
first.”
‘I said, save Natalie!” Gabriel’s voice was ice–cold.
The rescuer sighed and reached for Natalie.
Cassidy watched as they carefully extracted Natalie, while the half–supported elevator door made a terrifying creaking sound.
BANG!
The deformed metal crashed down on her leg, excruciating pain instantly engulfing her entire body.
The last thing she saw was Gabriel carrying Natalie away, and the children’s jubilant expressions.
The darkness completely swallowed her consciousness.
