Chapter 4
He stared at me in disbelief.
“Leo… what did he just call me?”
I let out a dry laugh, bitter and sharp.
“Isn’t this what you always wanted, Nate?”
We’ve been secretly married for six years.
But Nate didn’t just hide our marriage,
He never once let our son call him Dad.
The only difference now?
Back then, he made our son call him ‘Uncle,‘
Now, Leo’s the one drawing the line himself.
I lowered my eyes and tried to yank my hand free, but he wouldn’t let go.
Nate looked at me, his eyes unreadable,
“Just give me a few days.”
“I’ll explain everything to Leo.”
I reminded him coolly,
“Zoe’s waiting for you. Let go.”
It was like he’d just remembered, and reluctantly, he dropped my hand.
I scoffed and reached for Leo’s hand, ready to leave.
But Nate suddenly called out,
“Wait.”
He jogged back to his car and pulled out a cake box.
“Happy birthday, Leo.”

Zoe chimed in right on cue,
“That was actually my cake from Nate, but turns out it’s your son’s birthday.”
“What a coincidence.”
“Don’t feel bad taking it, Sophia.”
The cake suddenly felt like it weighed a thousand pounds in my hands.
I started to hand it back-
But then I saw the light in my son’s eyes.
My heart softened, and I stopped.
Leo didn’t understand the power play between adults.
He just looked up at Nate, full of hope.
“Can you eat with me?”
Nate hesitated for only a second before nodding.
Leo cheered and ran inside the living room, pulling me with him to open the box.
I ruffled his hair and quickly started cutting the cake.
But the second I took a bite, the smile on my face froze.
“Spit it out! Don’t eat that!”
I snatched the cake from Leo’s hand, panicked.
Nate’s expression darkened.
“Sophia, are you out of your mind?”
I lifted my head, eyes rimmed red.
“Leo’s allergic to mango. You didn’t know that?”
The color drained from his face.
“I–I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
Another sorry.

Chapter 4
Since the day our son was born, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard that.
Leo looked at Nate, wide–eyed, confused.
But the hope was gone.
“It’s okay. It makes sense… they didn’t know.”
And with that, Leo buried his face in my chest and refused to look at Nate again.
I didn’t hesitate.
I stood up and carried my son toward the door.
Even after stepping out of the house,
I could still feel Nate’s panicked, regretful gaze on us.
But this time, neither of us flinched.
After leaving the house, I went straight to the office and quickly packed up my things.
I was planning to say a proper goodbye.
But now?
There’s really no point.
I placed the signed divorce papers on the desk and let out a long breath.
Then I grabbed my suitcase and took my son straight to the airport.
Before we boarded the plane, I looked down at him.
“Are you mad that I’m taking you away?”
He shook his head and pressed his cheek to mine.
“I just want to be with you, Mom.”
That was it-
The dam finally broke.
All the pain, all the heartache, melted into something like peace.
I pulled out my phone and blocked Nate on everything.

Chapter 4
Nate, this is goodbye–for real this time.
The next morning, Nate showed up to work right on time.
After what happened yesterday, he hadn’t been able to sleep at all.
He opened his email, trying to focus-
And right at the top was an approved notice.
“Letter of resignation?”
