“Angel… I’m sorry, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have said those things about you…. I was just talking nonsense in the moment. I deserve to die!”
What nonsense requires tongues intertwining with Mary?
Pete raised his hand and slapped himself hard several times, but still couldn’t get me to spare him a glance.
“Just go. Maybe we did have a past, but that’s all it is the past. I have a new love now, and will have a new family.”
After saying this, I took Alexander’s hand and walked toward home.
The sixth day of the lunar new year was an auspicious day.
Father held my hand, tears in his eyes, as he placed it in Alexander’s.
Before Father could speak, Alexander solemnly vowed, “Dad, I will treat Angel well for my entire life- cherish her, love her, spoil her!”
Father repeated “good” three times, embracing Mother as they both wept.
Fighting back tears, I held hands with Alexander as we walked toward the stage to begin our new chapter in life.
Angela, who had appeared at some point, watched us exchange rings and kiss. He staggered forward but tripped over something.
He tried to get up but had no strength left.
He could only cover his face and sob.
Tears flowed through his fingers, disappearing into the red carpet without a trace.
Just as security was ordered to remove him, Pete’s mother and Mary burst onto the scene.
Seeing me marry Alexander, my former mother–in–law wore the same look of disbelief as Pete.
“Son, how could that slut Angela marry your uncle…”
The usually obedient Pete roared when he heard his mother call me a slut, “Shut up! Don’t you dare talk about Angel like that! It’s all my fault that she left me so heartlessly. I won the inheritance rights but lost her…”
He looked up at Alexander, pleading, “Uncle, I’ll give you the inheritance rights, all of it – just please give her back to me? I only now understand how painful life is without her…”
Alexander coldly told him, “You think you won those inheritance rights? I let you have them. I thought with the

inheritance, you would marry Angel and give her proper status. But what did you do?”
“Your first move was to go abroad to win back your first love. What did you take Angel for?”
“Since you couldn’t love her or give her a home, don’t blame me!”
Hearing the truth, Pete forgot even to cry, “So, you went to such lengths to fight with me… to force me to grow up? To make me protect Angel?”
I also looked at Alexander in shock.
So he had been silently protecting me all along.
As our eyes met, I suddenly remembered my first visit to his family.
When Pete’s mother bullied me for coming from a humble background and showed nothing but contempt, while Pete just kept his head down eating without a word, it was Alexander who spoke up to defend me.
In my humility then, I hadn’t dared to look up at him.
But now, gazing deeply at this man who had fallen in love with me at first sight, I stood on tiptoes and kissed him of my own accord.
Seeing us kiss, Pete wept and began banging his head against the ground.
Mary couldn’t bear to see him hurt himself and tried to pull him up, “Pete, get up! If she won’t marry you, I will!”
But as soon as the words left her mouth, Pete slapped her face, “Get lost! What right do you have to marry me? If you hadn’t encouraged me to sound that alarm, how could Angel have gone for an abortion?
We wouldn’t be where we are now. It’s you – it’s all your fault I lost my wife!”
Pete grew increasingly agitated, his eyes bloodshot as he violently choked Mary.
When Pete’s mother tried to intervene, she too faced his indiscriminate attack.
The scene ended with the police arriving to take them away.
This small drama didn’t affect our wedding.
The wedding concluded perfectly.
Exhausted after the long day, lying in bed, Alexander held me tight as if afraid I would vanish, “Angel, this whole day feels like an unreal dream…”
Looking at the soul guide nodding to me in the air, I hugged him back tightly, “This isn’t a dream.”
The fair–skinned little boy in the soul guide’s arms smiled sweetly at me, “Mama, I want to be your baby again!”
