Chapter 21
Dax had never seen her so angry. He and Bea had small disagreements, and he had seen her frustration and some ire, but never to this extreme. Her face was expressive, and her breast was heaving as she continued. “As the Steward of this Castle, you are over most everything. I will continue to show respect and give you as much space as I’m able to but-”
She paused as another man walked into the room. “You called for me, Princess?”
Dax knew the gentleman standing next to his wife. It was his lawman, Rontell Fuller, and he was stationed at his castle just in case he was needed. The retainer was expensive, but the man had saved Dax many times over. He was loyal and one of his closest friends. Dax wondered absently how Bea would have known to call for him.
“Mr. Fuller, thank you for coming.” Dax could see out of the corner of his eye as David shifted from leg to leg. Clearly flustered. “When I married Prince Dax, you let me know what my duties entailed. Please confirm for our Steward what duties and charges fall to me.”
With a moment of confusion and a look around the three of them, the lawman seemed to understand the situation. “Ah. Well, all management regarding Prince Dax, prioritization of staff and household funds, a majority of the land for this region and-” He paused very briefly to look at the Steward. “You now share all of the rights that are attached to Prince Dax and his Kingdom.”
With that, Bea walked up to David, but Dax could see her still visibly shaking. Her breaths were coming faster, too. When she began speaking, even her voice shook, but she kept pushing forward.
“So, you see, it’s up to me on how to treat MY husband. I decide who comes in here. I decide who enters this Castle, and while you say it was a foul trick for my parents to play on the kingdom, regarding my looks, I say it’s a foul trick you’re playing here. Do NOT come back into this room without a proper reason or my permission. If I find that you had anything to do with the Prince’s medicine or even the sheets that touch his skin, I will have you replaced.”
He started blubbering and tried unsuccessfully to create words, until finally he stalked past her. Only to stop at his tray to pick it up and say, “I can’t help but notice that the breakfast you made him doesn’t have the purple leaves of his medicine in it. Do you think you know more than his doctor,s too?”
Dax couldn’t see the expression Bea gave, but he saw the Steward’s smug smirk drop the instant she turned to him.
“Why no, Steward.” She said the word Steward like it was acrid in her mouth. “I’ve found that he takes the meal better for lunch, but I thank you for your concern. You may leave now.” The last sentence dropped in tone and harbored no room for response.
With that, David turned and walked to the open doors, stopping briefly to grab the serving tray he’d brought in.
was about to walk through them when he turned and looked back at Bea. Although she had sufficiently put him in his place, he still looked confident when he said, “We’ll see how much pressure you can take, Princess.” He sneered the word “Princess‘ at her before smiling evilly and leaving the room, taking his vile poison with him.
“Princess.” The Lawman said to Bea’s back cautiously. “David has been with us since before the Luna passed, Goddess be with her.”

“Goddess be with her.” The blessing seemed to automatically leave Bea’s lips.
“He’s a good man, if not an acquired taste.”
“He’s a vile man and I’ll not have him near our Prince.” She took a deep breath and walked back over to Dax. Gently cleaning up the smear of blood that trailed down his forearm.
“Very well. I trust you, but know this-” He too walked over to Dax’s bedside and watched as she cleaned the wound and prepared to dress it with the extra gauze on the bedside table. “I trust you only because you were Alpha Leo’s choice for our Prince. Betray either and I will not take any time in disposing of the daughter-” He paused just as he had earlier with David. “To a traitorous Wolf.”
