Chapter 9
Seeing Knox’s intense gaze, I couldn’t help but frown, turning back to continue discussing my requirements with the renovation manager.
As I turned, I was surprised to find Knox still standing nearby. He’d been waiting for quite some
time, yet his face lacked the impatience it would have shown in the past.
He strode quickly toward me, offering me a coffee, his tone carrying a hint of pleading.
“Raven, it’s your favorite–iced latte.”
“I… I’m sorry. I lost my temper before.”
“I apologize and hope you’ll give me a chance to make things right.”
“If you just take back the projects you transferred to Hayden, I’ll hand the entire company over to you to manage. I’ll work as your employee. I mean it, Raven.”
My eyes grew cold as I returned the coffee to his hand.
“I haven’t been able to drink cold beverages for a long time–stomach issues.”
“And I didn’t give away those projects. Perhaps instead of blaming me, you should reflect on your inability to manage your staff.”
“I don’t care about your company because I’m about to have my own.”
Knox’s humble expression suddenly froze.
“What do you mean? Are you talking about Marlow?”
The next second, he realized something and hurriedly tried calling her.
Once, twice–no answer.
His expression darkened rapidly.
I had no time to waste on him and turned to leave, but he suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Wait, Raven. Can’t you give me a chance to explain?”
“Signing the divorce was impulsive. I never wanted to separate from you. I’ve never betrayed you–you have to believe me. And now that you’re pregnant, you shouldn’t be without someone to take care of you. I can-”
Before he could finish, another hand wrapped around my shoulder from the side.
Hayden’s challenging gaze met Knox’s.
“The baby’s already gone. What, Mr. Reynolds didn’t know?”
“You really are a busy man, aren’t you? So busy you didn’t even notice your own secretary’s betrayal. Lucky it was me this time–at least the project money will go back to Raven. If it had been
taken by an outsider, that would have been a real disaster.”
Knox looked at me in disbelief, pain and sorrow flashing in his eyes. His grip on my wrist gradually
loosened.
“You really… terminated it?”
“I thought you were just upset with me. You’d abort our child for Hayden?”
“Raven, how could you do this to me?!”
Hearing his accusations, my own anger flared. Emotions suppressed for too long suddenly exploded.
“That’s my line, isn’t it?!”
“I fought for that company for ten years, and with one sentence, you handed shares to Marlow. Did you really think I was that stupid?”
“Yes, you never physically cheated, but doesn’t emotional infidelity count? When you’re drunk, you call out Marlow’s name. Do you have any idea how disgusting that is?”
“I told you before–I can see through your eyes into your heart. The look of love can never fool me.”
“Should I have kept the baby just to have it born facing a father’s affair?”
The barrage of questions made Knox bow his head lower and lower.
After a long, silent standoff, just as I was about to walk away, he whispered:

“I’m sorry…”
My steps faltered for a second, but I didn’t stop. I just took Hayden’s arm and left.
Once in the car, my tense nerves finally relaxed. I looked at him gratefully.
“Thank you for playing along with me.”
“The situation with Marlow–that was your doing, wasn’t it?”
Hayden smiled, raising an eyebrow.
“Yes. A little revenge on your behalf.”
“Feeling better now? I told you, with me, you never need to suppress your emotions.”
“If you just look back, you’ll see I’ve been waiting for you all along.”
I rolled my eyes helplessly.
“Your sweet talk is so cheesy.”
“As long as it works.”
Sunlight streamed through the glass, illuminating the wedding ring on my finger.
No one can ever know if their choices are right or wrong.
But in this moment, at least, I was being true to my own heart.
