After James left, Katie gradually drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, after freshening up and stepping out, Katie entered the hotel lobby–only to be approached by
James.
“Katie, Pamela happened to see the wedding dress we had customized on my phone, and she loves it. Can you give the dress to her?”
Before Katie could reply, she noticed Pamela in the distance, already wearing the wedding dress, walking toward them.
They had already claimed the dress, yet they were still seeking her approval.
Katie met James‘ gaze and replied with a single word. “Sure.”
She had already decided to move on from James–what difference did a used wedding dress make?
For some reason, Katie’s quick agreement left James uneasy.
Before he could inquire further, Pamela joined him.
“James, what were you discussing with Katie?”
James shifted his focus back to Pamela, saying gently, “It’s nothing.”
Pamela embraced him tightly and warned, “Don’t betray me by flirting with other women, or I’ll never speak to you again.”
Meanwhile, her best friend Jessica stepped in and spoke loudly enough for Katie to hear.
“Pamela, don’t scare our James. Everyone knows that when you and James argued years ago, you disappeared for the night with a dead phone, and James went crazy searching for you. He even got into a car accident.”
Upon hearing this, Katie felt both pathetic and ridiculous.
During her three–year relationship with James, they had their share of arguments too.
She had stormed off more than once, yet James never chased after her.
She was always the one to relent and apologize first.
This was the clear distinction between love and indifference.
“Those are old stories,” James‘ voice pulled Katie back to reality.
He added, “Katie, let’s go to the beach for a barbecue later. I remember you love grilled food.”

Before she could respond, Jessica interrupted again.

“James, you must be mistaken. The one who loves barbecues the most is Pamela. You two used to take me along as a third wheel for barbecues all the time.”
Hearing this, Katie spoke slowly, “You guys go ahead. I don’t like barbecues anymore.”
There were only six days left.
She didn’t want to pretend to go along with his act anymore.
On her way to the restaurant, Katie received a call from her sister.
“The wedding dress and everything else is ready. They’ve been delivered to my villa in Spain. In six days, you’ll be waiting there for the wedding procession.”
“Okay,” said Katie.
After breakfast, Katie spent the rest of the morning in her hotel room. In the afternoon, she took a solitary walk along the beach.
She stood on a reef near the shore, gazing at the sea under the setting sun.
Not sure how much time had passed, she noticed the waves crashing against the reef grew stronger.
Just as she was about to leave, Pamela appeared beside her, seemingly out of nowhere.
“Ms. Jensen, you must have realized by now that I didn’t lose my memory, right?”
Katie looked at her in confusion as Pamela continued, “When I revisited my past relationship with James, I realized I can’t live without him at all.”
“So, what are you trying to say?” Katie asked.
“I have to stay by his side,” Pamela said, enunciating each word clearly.
Katie didn’t mince words. “Don’t worry. I don’t want him anymore. You two can be together.”
Pamela obviously didn’t believe her.
“James isn’t just a pilot–he’s the heir to the Jimmerson Group. Would you really be so kind as to give him up to me? Only one of us can stay by his side.”
As soon as the words fell, Pamela shoved Katie hard.
Katie’s eyes flickered with surprise. She instinctively stepped sideways to dodge.
Caught off guard by her own momentum, Pamela’s body lurched forward beyond the reef’s edge, and with a splash, she fell into the sea.
