Chapter 2
James was in disbelief. Just the night before, Katie had been jealous–how was she so generous today?
Perhaps realizing he might have overreacted, James quietly said, “Thank you.”
At that moment, a friend of James called out from afar, “James, it’s time for the next step.”
Without another word to Katie, James headed straight toward Pamela.
Standing not too far away, Katie overheard Pamela asking, “What’s the next step?”
A mutual friend of James and Pamela responded in Spanish, “The next step is the wedding night festivities. Four years ago, you, James and the rest of us gathered here and celebrated early. Remember?”
Pamela’s face turned a deep shade of red, spreading down to her neck.
The crowd began chanting in Spanish.
“Wedding night!”
“Wedding night!”
Curious, Katie asked one of their friends, “It’s so lively–what exactly is the next step?”
The friend paused, keeping his expression composed as he answered, “It’s just a little game.”
He continued, “James and Pamela are in the past. Don’t get it wrong, Katie.”
Another friend chimed in, also in Spanish, “Why waste time on her? She’s just a junior tour guide who doesn’t even understand Spanish.”
The first friend responded, “We can’t let James deal with any domestic issues. He’s going to marry Pamela soon, and then we won’t have to deal with her anymore.”
Katie glanced at the lively crowd, her voice so quiet, only she could hear it.
“Do you really think I’m clueless?” she said, also in Spanish.
Unable to watch any longer, Katie turned away and returned to the Hilton Hotel.
Perhaps because she had stayed up all night, she drifted into a deep sleep on the large bed.
When she awoke, it was already dark outside.
Katie was about to head downstairs for dinner.
As she stepped out, she saw James holding Pamela’s hand as they returned to the hotel with their friends.

Pamela waved enthusiastically at Katie. “Katie, why are you back early?” she asked, stepping closer to take Katie’s arm in a show of friendliness.
“James proposed to me! They say you’re his best friend–you’ll give us your blessing, right?”
All their friends held their breath, aware that Katie was James‘ official girlfriend.
Pamela’s question made them anxious that Katie might lose her cool and expose everything, spoiling the moment.
Katie looked calmly at Pamela, then met James‘ anxious eyes and responded steadily, “Of course. I wish you an early birth of precious children, eternal love, and to never part again for the rest of your lives.”
