Chapter 5
My family and James’s family were extremely close. As my brother’s best friend, James had been present throughout almost my entire childhood.
The only problem was, we had a terrible relationship.
Every time we met, we’d either bicker with each other or have huge fights. When I turned eighteen, he suddenly confessed to me. I thought he was joking and rejected him outright.
Turned out he was serious. He’d been pursuing me relentlessly ever since.
Until the day I got engaged to Henry, when he told me with red rimmed eyes:
“Leila, you’ll never get another man as excellent as me.”
Yet yesterday, this billionaire who appeared cold on the surface but was actually deeply devoted still secretly came to stop my wedding.
Thinking about this, I couldn’t help but smile slightly.
Perhaps marrying this man who understood me and could make me laugh really wasn’t such a bad choice after all.
BANG!
The hospital room door was kicked open violently.
Henry’s eyes were bloodshot as he charged in, grabbed my wrist, and roughly dragged me toward the door:
“Leila! How dare you go tattling to Grandfather?! He’s forcing Chloe to leave the country now!”
‘I didn’t tattle.”
He was pulling me so hard I felt dizzy, repeating mechanically.
“Still lying!” he roared, his breathing so rapid it was almost trembling. “What exactly did Chloe do to wrong you? Just because she’s my ex–wife? That’s a fact that can never be changed!”
I looked at the man before me with disappointment, suddenly finding him utterly foreign. My voice came out
hoarse:
“Henry, yesterday she wore a wedding dress and stood at the wedding ceremony. So many guests saw… Grandfather may be in retreat, but he’s not cut off from the world.”
Henry suddenly froze as if realizing something, his hands gripping my wrists tightly:

“Leila, my mind was too scattered just now. I’m sorry.”
His voice trembled as scalding tears fell onto the back of my hand. “Please go beg Grandfather. Only you can convince him to let Chloe stay.”
Seeing my silence, he actually dropped to one knee:
“We’ll register our marriage tomorrow! Whatever you want, I’ll agree to it!”
Watching his trembling shoulders, I suddenly laughed: “Fine, I have just one condition.”
“Tell me!” He looked up urgently.
“Cancel the engagement. Never cross paths again from now on.”
“Impossible! I can’t lose you.” He shot up, then lowered his head in distress. “But I can’t abandon Chloe either…”
I cut him off:
“Don’t worry. I’ll tell Grandfather I’m the one ending this relationship. You won’t be held responsible, okay?”
Fighting off my dizziness, I headed for the door. Henry quickly caught up and supported me:
“Leila, it’s not what you think… Never mind, tomorrow we’ll go register our marriage. That should put your mind at
ease, right?”
He drove at breakneck speed to the airport VIP lounge.
Seeing us, James’s grandfather waved amiably:
“Leila, the Sinclair family has wronged you this time.”
Then he cast a cold glance at Chloe sitting on the floor:
“This woman and child will never be accepted by the Sinclair family.”
I took a deep breath: “James’s grandfather, I hope you can give them a future.”
The moment I finished speaking, Chloe suddenly grabbed a wine bottle from the table and smashed it against her
own head.
Blood quickly streamed down her pale cheeks.
She pushed away the panicked Henry, endured the pain as she knelt on the ground, and flashed me a mocking smile
“Leila, if I die, you won’t have to see me anymore. Henry and I have nothing between us. I won’t accept these baseless accusations!”

Before she could finish, she collapsed heavily to the floor.
James’s grandfather was a devout religious man who couldn’t bear such scenes.
He snorted coldly and left.
Only Henry’s heart–wrenching cries remained in the VIP lounge:
“Leila, save her! You’re a doctor–you can definitely save her!”
I struggled to stand up from the sofa, my heart ice–cold.
After all these years, he didn’t even know I was just an internal medicine doctor who couldn’t handle this kind of trauma.
After calling for an ambulance, I turned to leave.
Henry suddenly grabbed a wine bottle and hurled it at me, his eyes terrifyingly cold:
“Leila, how can you be so heartless! If anything happens to Chloe, I swear I’ll make you regret it for the rest of your life!”
The bottle struck the back of my head hard. Searing pain hit me as warm liquid flowed down my neck.
