Chapter 7
Aiden had been unusually busy these past few days.
Caroline watched coldly as he left early and returned late, never letting his phone out of sight. The light in his study stayed on until dawn.
She knew he was planning his wedding intervention.
On the morning their divorce cooling–off period ended, Caroline went out early to collect the final divorce papers from her lawyer.
The property division was already settled–she was taking only her personal belongings.
When she returned home, Aiden was at the mirror adjusting his tie.
He wore a brand–new navy blue suit, cufflinks gleaming in the morning light.
It was a style she’d never seen before–clearly purchased for today’s event.
“Back from your walk?” He caught her reflection and smiled warmly. “I need to go out today, babe.
Rest up and don’t forget your medicine.”
He turned, his long fingers gently brushing her stomach as he whispered, “Be good for mommy today. If you make her uncomfortable, daddy will be upset.”
Caroline looked at the tenderness in his eyes and found it ironic.
He’d risk his life for Elise, yet didn’t even know his own child was gone.
She gripped the divorce papers tightly. “I need to talk to you about something.”
Aiden hesitated. “Caroline, I really need to leave now.”
“That urgent?” she asked softly. “You can’t even spare five minutes for me?”
He checked his watch, then shook his head. “Can we talk tonight instead?”
“Is whatever you’re doing really that important?”

“Very important,” he answered without hesitation, his eyes determined to the point of obsession. “More important than my life.”
Caroline smiled. Like winter’s last snowflake, gone in an instant.
“Go ahead then,” she said quietly. “Don’t let me keep you.”
Aiden seemed about to say something, but settled for a light kiss on her forehead before hurrying
out.
As the sound of his car engine faded, Caroline walked to his study and opened the door that no one had thought to check.
Cold air hit her face as she removed the long–forgotten box and placed it gently on the coffee table.
Inside the box was the medical record of the miscarriage.
She closed her eyes briefly, then placed the new divorce certificate beside it.
When she walked out the door with her suitcase, Caroline didn’t look back.
The airport terminal buzzed with travelers.
Just as she was about to turn off her phone before takeoff, a text from Aiden appeared:
“Babe, your medicine is warming in the kitchen. I’ll be home right after I finish up.”
Aiden, for the rest of my life, the person by my side will never be you again.
I’ve finally erased you completely from my world.
Caroline calmly deleted the message, then deleted all their photos. And finally, removed all his
contact information.
As the plane lifted into the air, she could almost hear something in her heart click–like hitting a delete button.
It was the sound of every last bit of love she’d ever felt for him… disappearing forever.
