Aiden wasn’t completely drunk. He’d heard Elise’s question but didn’t know how to answer.
He stared at the medical record still sitting on the table and pulled it to his chest.
“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.”
His apology could have been meant for the child, or for Caroline.
“Aiden, let’s give the baby a proper burial, okay?” Elise had come to his house and found him still staring at the document, lost in thought!
After a long silence, Aiden finally nodded.
He purchased a plot in the most expensive cemetery in the New York for the child.
The headstone had no photo, no name.
Just the simple inscription: “Beloved child of Aiden Kemnis and Caroline Flores.”
Aiden knelt before the headstone after the burial, tracing Caroline’s name with his fingers.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Elise stood to the side, her eyes filled with disgust and impatience.
But when Aiden glanced her way, she quickly switched to a grief–stricken expression.
“The poor child. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Aiden ignored her and walked past.
Elise hurried after him. “Aiden, slow down! I can’t keep up.”
As she followed, she suddenly let out a dramatic yelp.
Aiden turned around with his expression displeased.
“My heels rubbed my foot raw,” she complained.

Aiden would have immediately carried her and bought her band–aids and flat shoes before.
But he just stood there today, making no move to help.
“Aiden, my foot really hurts. Could you carry me down?” Elise had to ask directly.
“I didn’t ask you to come today. If you decided to come, you should have known what terrain to expect and worn appropriate shoes.”
Elise stood frozen, staring at him in disbelief. “Aiden, what the hell? You were never like this.”
Faced with her accusation, Aiden didn’t even flinch.
“Before was before. Elise, whatever was between us should have ended when you disappeared
without a word.”
Elise panicked at his word. Ignoring her injured foot, she rushed to him.
“You don’t mean that. You’re just saying it to piss me off, right?”
She reached for his hand. Aiden immediately pulled away.
“Elise, I love Caroline. Whatever this is between us needs to end.”
She refused to believe him. “Aiden, Caroline’s gone. Why can’t we be together?”
‘You still love me. I know you do.”
Aiden responded coldly.
‘Elise, I’ve thought to myself clearly. Yes, I had feelings for you once, but that was in the past. I helped you when you came back out of old loyalty, not love. I love Caroline. I want to be with her.”
With that, Aiden turned and walked off.
Only one thought consumed his mind now:
Find Caroline. Apologize to her and win her back.
