Chapter 13
“Dude, that’s enough. Stop drinking.”
Aiden kept downing glass after glass, using alcohol to quiet the chaos in his chest.
“How could she leave me? Caroline loved me so much.”
No one at the table knew how to respond. Finally, one called Elise.
“Aiden, stop. You’ve had enough.” Elise rushed over and tried to take his drink away.
Aiden glanced up at her, then took the glass back from her hand.
“Leave me alone.”
The others tactfully left the private room, giving Aiden and Elise space.
Elise swept all the glasses off the table onto the floor. The crash of shattering glass jolted Aiden
halfway out of his stupor.
Elise couldn’t understand why he was spiraling now that Caroline was gone. The man who claimed
to love her, who had abandoned Caroline at a moment’s notice–why was he devastated?
She sat beside him. “Aiden… weren’t you the one who said you loved me?”
Aiden kept his head down in silent.
“You clearly care about me. You were willing to drop everything with Caroline to be with me. You
even crashed a wedding and risked your company’s finances for me.”
“Look, I was wrong back then. I shouldn’t have given up on us. But I’m back now. I still have feelings
for you, and you have feelings for me. Why can’t we just be together?”
Aiden had only married Caroline to spite Elise in the first place.
This should have been exactly what he wanted all along, so why wasn’t he happy?
Elise saw the flicker in his eyes and she wrapped her arms around him.

Chapter 13
“It’s my fault to leave without telling you back then–putting my education first. Aiden, Caroline’s gone now. Let’s be together, okay?”
Aiden was too drunk to think clearly. He looked at Elise with an unreadable expression.
He didn’t know what to do or how he felt anymore.
Did he love Caroline?
In the beginning, it had definitely been about revenge. But after all their time together, after she’d
carried his child…
Aiden couldn’t deny he’d developed real feelings for Caroline.
But what about Elise?
His first love, the woman he once genuinely loved–after all these years, did he still love her?
Aiden wasn’t sure. His mind was a complete mess.
“But Caroline leaving… it hurts so much.”
Elise could tell he was drunk. She ventured carefully. “You’re just not used to it. Once you’re with me, you’ll forget all about her.”
She pressed on. “Aiden, can we try again?” Elise desperately wanted his answer.
Aiden pushed away as she leaned in closer, but didn’t respond to her question.
He stumbled out, asking his friends to take him home.
Left without an answer, Elise watched him go and hurled a sofa cushion to the floor in frustration.
