Series1–Chapter 1
At twenty, Caroline Flores married her dad’s best friend, Aiden Kemnis,
Eight years her senior, Aiden was infamous in business world as the cold hearted “King of Wall Street.” Though he kept most women at a distance, with Caroline he was completely different
If she happened to mention liking a piece of jewelry, the next day it would appear in a designer box
on her dresser.
When Caroline had terrible cramps, he’d reschedule important meetings just to make her his special soup and coax her to drink it.
During their sex, he’d hold her close and murmur, “You’re mine, babe,” telling her how addicted he
was to her.
All his social media accounts carried the same name: “Für Elise,”
Caroline always thought it was a reference to their first meeting at the Phillips Foundation gala, where she’d performed that Beethoven piece.
Until the day she discovered an old photo album hidden in his study.
Every page showed the same girl smiling at a piano. And she looked a lot like Caroline,
On the back of one photo, handwritten words read:
“Für Elise, for my beloved Elise Versta.”
After discovering the truth, Caroline did only two things.
First, she went to the hospital to terminate her five month pregnancy,
Five months along, the baby had already started kicking. On the operating table, she bit her lip and didn’t cry–until the nurse asked, “Do you want to see the baby?” She finally shook her head and
broke down.
Second, she drafted divorce papers.

Then she called Aiden.
He used to answer her calls instantly, his voice warm. “What’s wrong, baby?”
But this time, she called twenty–three times before he picked up.
Through the phone came background noise and then his friend’s teasing voice:
“First loves hit different, huh? Elise comes back, and Aiden ditches his pregnant wife at home.”
“She’s just a stand–in. C’mon, you know how obsessed Aiden was with Elise back in the day. When they broke up, the guy almost drank himself to death. Never got over her. Just found a lookalike to fill the space.”
“Poor girl doesn’t even know! She’s always all over him. Saw her kissing Aiden the other day, totally
wrapped around him. If that were my girl–soft voice, cute face–I’d have forgotten Elise in a
heartbeat.”
“Yeah, but Aiden’s secretly a hopeless romantic. Elise is his one and only. Elise whines about her
heels hurt, and he literally carried her to buy flats?”
Caroline gripped her phone, tears streaming down her face.
The background noise suddenly stopped.
“Who answered my phone?” Aiden’s voice cut in.
“Uh… dunno, might’ve hit it by accident…”
Footsteps, then quiet again.
When he spoke again, it was with that warm tone she’d fallen for. “What’s wrong, babe? Is it the thunderstorm keeping you up?”
“I’m at a business dinner. I’ll be home soon to take care of you and our little one, okay?”
Caroline took a deep breath. “I want you to sign the div-”
Before she could finish, a woman’s voice interrupted. “Aiden, my feet hurt…”
After a moment of silence, he hurriedly said to Caroline. “Go to sleep, babe. I’ll be home later.”

Then he hung up.
Caroline let out a soft laugh. She wiped away the last of her tears and looked up at the table.
Two “gifts” for Aiden sat there.
Divorce papers and a small box containing medical records of the miscarriage.
Those who betray honest hearts deserve all the pain that follows.
She’s young, but she wouldn’t tolerate such deception. The man who had lied to her didn’t deserve
ner.
Caroline Flores could love deeply, but she could walk away just as completely.
After sitting there for what felt like forever, she finally got up and put the box in his study.
Just then, the front door opened.
‘Babe, why are you still up?” Aiden walked in, slipping off his suit jacket with his tie hanging loose. ‘Looking for a midnight snack?”
Caroline just stared at him silently.
Uncomfortable with her coldness, he pulled out an elegant takeout box from behind his back, his eyes softening. “Drove all over town for this. It’s your favorite, right?”
He laid out all the treats–the ones she’d craved during her morning sickness these past months.
A few weeks ago, she would’ve jumped into his arms, kissed him like crazy.
But now, it just felt like a cruel joke.
‘You okay? Why so quiet? Is our little one acting up again?”
Then he reached for her stomach.
Caroline blocked his hand and handed him a document. “Sign it.”
He paused, about to flip it open when his phone rang.
She caught the name on the screen: Elise.

After the call, his expression changed. Without even reading the papers, he quickly signed them and grabbed his car keys.
“Babe, something came up. I need to handle this. Get some sleep.”
At the door, he added gently, “Buy whatever you want from now on. No need to ask me. We’re
married–what’s mine is yours.”
Caroline clutched the divorce papers he’d just signed and gave a bitter smile.
“Aiden, we won’t be married much longer.”
