Chapter 22
A sharp, burning sensation spread through my throat, and my body tensed as dizziness crashed over me. Suddenly, it became hard for me to breathe.
A thought flashed through my mind, and panic instantly gripped me.
My baby.
I gasped, and my hands gripped the arm of the sofa as pain shot through me. My heartbeat pounded faster, and fear coursed through me.
I tried to stand, but my legs buckled, and I collapsed to my knees. I clutched my abdomen as a
terror coursed over me.
My baby. I thought to myself.
Lila sighed, standing above me with a smirk on her lips.

She looked nothing like the weak, sickly person of before. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. My body was shutting down.
Lila crouched down beside me, and she brushed my hair back as if she cared.
I forced my lips to move. “W–why?” I finally gasped out.
Lila sighed, shaking her head. “Because I made a mistake,” she replied with bitterness in her
voice.
My body felt like it was burning from the inside out. What would happen to my baby? I thought to myself.
“I left him for someone who I thought loved me more, but I was wrong. Killian was devastated when I left. Did you know that? He loved me, June. And I threw it away.”
Even though I could barely keep my eyes open, my heart ached as I realized that Lila wasn’t just a friend. She was Killian’s ex, his first love.
“I thought he would wait for me,” Lila continued. “I thought that no matter what, I could come back, and he would still be mine. But then he married April, your sister.” She sneered.
She let out a humorless laugh. “But that didn’t last, did it? I thought it meant I had a second
chance. That Killian would come back to me.”
Lila glared at me. “But you showed up,” she whispered harshly. “You took what was supposed to
be mine.”
‘At first, I wasn’t worried. I thought it wouldn’t last either. But then I saw him with you. I heard the way he spoke about you. I saw the way his eyes lit up when he talked about you.” She hissed venomously.
“At that point, I realized that I would never get him back.” She snarled,
My eyes began to close, as I began losing consciousness, but Lila slapped me hard on my cheeks.
“No, no, you can’t die now. I’m not done talking.” She said with a chilling smile on her face.
“Did you know that before I came here, he called me. He said he wouldn’t be the one watching

over me anymore,” she whispered, “That he was assigning someone else to take care of me. Because he needed to focus on you.”
She grabbed my face harshly. “Killian would have never done anything like this to me before. But now…” she trailed off.
Her eyes darkened. “That,” she hissed, “was the moment I knew you had to die.”
I felt so hopeless at that moment. I couldn’t protect myself. I couldn’t protect my child.
Tears burned in my eyes, but I refused to cry in front of her.
I had waited too long. I should have told Killian. I should have told someone.
I couldn’t stay awake any longer. The darkness overwhelmed me, and I lost consciousness.
The last thought that echoed in my mind before everything went black was:
My baby. Please, hold on.

Lila moved quickly, picking the glass of water from the table. She wanted to rush to the kitchen to wash away the evidence of poison, but as she was about to leave, the front door opened.
Killian stepped inside with a bouquet of fresh flowers in his hand. His eyes immediately landed on June’s body on the floor.
His entire body stiffened.
“June?” He called.
Lila gasped dramatically, spinning around with wide, frantic eyes.
“Killian! Oh, thank god you’re here. I was just about to call you!” She hurried toward him, with tears welling up in her eyes. “She just collapsed. I don’t know what happened, and she’s not responding!”
She reached out to hold his arm, but he stepped away from her reach, keeping his eyes on June.
Lila’s pretense was very convincing. Her voice was shaking, her lips were trembling, and tears welled up in her eyes.
However, Killian felt that something was wrong. He glanced at Lila one more time, before realization dawned on him.
Lila didn’t look sick anymore.
The frail woman that he had been watching over, and caring for, looked so different now. Few hours ago, she had barely been able to stand on her own, but now she stood in front of him looking healthy.
He clenched his jaw. Something wasn’t right. But right now, that wasn’t his priority.
He dropped the bouquet, and rushed to June’s side. He placed his hand on her forehead. Her skin was hot–too hot.
His heart raced in his chest..
“June,” he called softly, but she didn’t move. He checked her pulse. It was weak. Too weak. He growled, pulling out his phone to call for help.

“She was fine when I left.” He spat. “What happened?”
“I–I don’t know!” Lila stammered. “She was drinking water, and then she just–collapsed!”
Killian’s gaze snapped to the glass in her hand. When he walked in, she was walking towards the kitchen. He narrowed his eyes. Maybe she was trying to get rid of the water. Why?
He clenched his jaw.
Poison.
His nose flared with rage, and his eyes blazed.
“What did you do?” He growled at her.
Lila took a step back, her eyes widening slightly. “W–what? I didn’t-”
Killian’s eyes were dark as he stared at Lila with an intense gaze that felt like he was piercing into her soul.
“Don’t. Lie. To. Me.”
Lila knew at that moment that her ruse was up. She slumped in defeat.
