The research project Lila had joined was classified, so naturally the research facility wasn’t open to just anyone.
But the Thorne family owned pharmaceutical companies that collaborated with the military, and with Callan’s military connections, he managed to enter the Atlantic drug research facility as a consultant after pulling some
strings.
At that moment, Lila was leading the research team in extracting compounds from octopuses they had just captured.
Their research was related to marine organisms, which was why the facility was built in the Atlantic.
“Octopuses have remarkable regenerative abilities–their tentacles can regrow infinitely after being severed,” Lila explained. “Our mission is to extract this regenerative factor from octopus tentacles and develop it into a
medication.”
“If we succeed, it will be a revolutionary breakthrough for the entire medical field.”
Originally, Lila had been a technical backbone of the team, highly proficient with advanced medical equipment and skilled at extracting pharmaceutical compounds.
But before arriving at the facility, Callan had shattered her fingers with a hammer.
All five fingers of her right hand suffered compound fractures.
Although the military immediately arranged top surgeons to operate on Lila after she arrived at the facility, compound fractures are irreversible–Lila’s right hand was permanently disabled, unable to operate equipment
anymore.
With no other choice, she switched to theoretical research while simultaneously teaching other team members how to operate the equipment.
When Callan found Lila, she was in the facility’s laboratory, guiding a graduate student in operating equipment to extract pharmaceutical compounds.
‘Lila, I finally found you!” Callan rushed over, desperately embracing her regardless of the surroundings. “Do you have any idea how insane I’ve been going missing you?”
Lila froze completely, never imagining she would see Callan at the military facility.
This was a secret base built by the military in the Atlantic Ocean–it didn’t even appear on satellite maps. And her research project involved classified national security information… How had Callan found her?!
She had firmly decided never to see Callan again in this lifetime, yet here he was…
Lila’s emotions were incredibly complicated. She pushed Callan away with effort, rejecting any physical contact:

“Mr. Thorne, we’re divorced. Please show some self respect!”
Confronted with Lila’s cold gaze, Callan felt heartbroken. His voice trembled: “Lila, I know you’re still angry, but that night I didn’t do it intentionally. I had no idea the person they brought in was you.”
“I’m a victim too–Zara tricked me. This was all her scheme to drive us apart. If we let her succeed in turning us against each other, she wins!”
Hearing that, Lila laughed bitterly: “Hasn’t Zara already won? She got exactly what she wanted–marrying you. And you held a wedding ceremony for her overseas.”
