Chapter 16
What made it even worse, when I sat down at the table, I realized my colleague had completely lied to me.
This wasn’t a farewell dinner for me at all.
It was a business dinner between Garrick’s company and Harlan!
My colleague said they tricked me into coming because my name was still on some proposal they’d submitted to Harlan before.
Plus Garrick wanted me there too.
He said since I’d lied to him using Harlan’s name before, if they were going to invite me to something like this, they had to.
So they came up with this scheme.
I was so speechless I didn’t even want to get angry.
Harlan and I sat at opposite ends of the table, neither of us looking at each other.
I didn’t dare.
And he…
His whole body language screamed he was pissed off and unapproachable.
Great.
Something that was already hard to explain just got a million times harder.
was fucking desperate.
After realizing I’d been tricked, I really wanted to flip the table and storm out.
Especially with Garrick shooting me contemptuous looks every few minutes.
knew he was definitely getting the wrong idea again.
But with Harlan here, if I left, he wouldn’t come with me.
Feeling completely powerless, I spotted the alcohol on the table.
Suddenly I had an idea.

Chapter 16
Harlan was actually pretty soft–hearted.
Even if he believed my explanation, he’d probably still be mad about me hiding things initially.
Maybe… I should play the victim card.
In front of everyone.
I poured myself a full glass.
Everyone looked over at me, and Harlan glanced at me for the first time tonight.
It worked!
I felt energized.
I downed the whole glass right there.
Then snuck a peek.
Harlan was frowning.
It really worked!
The alcohol hit me and made my head spin briefly.
I steadied myself.
Then poured another glass.
A colleague nearby couldn’t help but speak up.
‘Elysia, we haven’t even started eating yet. You shouldn’t drink like that…”
ignored him.
After the dizziness passed, I drank the second glass too.
‘m not usually much of a drinker.
Two shots of hard liquor hit me hard.
This time the feeling was even more intense than before.
When I opened my eyes again, everything was blurry.
looked at Harlan.

He was looking at me too.
I could sense his expression was complicated.
But I couldn’t see clearly.
My mind was getting fuzzy.
When I felt his gaze about to leave me, I blurted out
“Hubby!”
The private room went dead silent.
Pin–drop quiet.
Some asshole colleague spoke up first“Wow, Elysia’s really lost her mind trying to get with Garrick.”
Then scattered laughter started around the room.
Garrick looked at me with a dark expression.
“Can’t even control your damn mouth–why the hell are you drinking?”
I was stunned for a moment.
Realizing I’d just said the wrong thing.
But before I could explain.
Harlan, who’d been silent the whole time, let out a cold laugh.
“She was talking to me.”
‘Why are you getting so worked up about it?”
This time, the room went truly silent.
Even quieter than before.
The expression on Garrick’s face looked like it was cracking apart piece by piece.
