Elijah took the final inventory. Eighteen thunder grenades were seized, plus a substantial stockpile of materials for their production.
“That white–clad bandit really didn’t come back to tip them off. Otherwise, we couldn’t have gotten all this.” Leanna looked at Jessica, her eyes sparkling with admiration. “Jessica, your strategic mind far surpasses even Dayton’s. Maybe not even your mother could match you! I’m truly impressed!”
Jessica said softly, “Dayton may be a general, but compared to a real strategist, he’s just a reckless rookie.”
Leanna was momentarily stunned. Was that really appropriate for a niece to say? She couldn’t believe Jessica would speak of Dayton that way!
But somehow, the words “reckless rookie” inexplicably cheered Leanna up, and she couldn’t help but burst into hearty laughter.
Leanna said, “That’s right, he really is a reckless rookie, all courage and no strategy! Still, Dayton may be a bit simple, but he’s loyal, brave, and patriotic. He is a true hero of a man.”
He might have been a bit simple, but it was his honest, straightforward nature that captivated Leanna at first sight. She was instantly drawn to those clear, innocent eyes of his.
One glance bound their fates for eternity.
Jessica gently squeezed Leanna’s hand. “If that weren’t the case, how could you have fallen so deeply for him?”
Leanna’s hand was so warm.
Jessica felt a wave of relief wash over her.
Not all lost things need to be avoided in conversation. In truth, Alivia loved it when people mentioned Dayton. Each reference made her feel Dayton still
lived.
He lived on in their memories.
Leanna was truly over the moon, especially when she heard Jessica call Dayton a “reckless rookie” in such a lighthearted tone. It gave her the vivid sense that Dayton was still with them.
So it turned out that mentioning Dayton could actually feel so lighthearted.
It wasn’t spoken with pity, nor did it bring that familiar pang of grief. It felt no different than mentioning anyone else in their lives.
‘This feeling is truly wonderful,‘ Leanna thought.
“Ms. Yates, Lady Leanna, Prince Leon requests your presence,”
said as he suddenly appeared before the two.
Jessica and Leanna hurried over to find Leon standing before several corpses, his eyes dark with unreadable thoughts.
Jessica said, “These assassins didn’t poison themselves. They severed their own meridians to die.”
With just a glance, Jessica could already get the general idea.
“Why is this different?”
The fact that not a single assassin survived spoke volumes about the terrifying effectiveness of their training.
In desperation, they slaughtered all the artisans who made the thunder grenades, leaving no survivors for interrogation.
But assassins usually committed suicide by taking poison. So why were these ones different?
Leanna frowned. “Only peerless masters can sever their own meridians to die, at least someone as skilled as that white–clad assailant.”
