Leon stared intently at her face.

Jessica muttered, “I didn’t…”
“You came all this way alone just to find me. If I still couldn’t recognize your concern, I’d be worse than a fool.”
He had never expected Jessica to come after him, so it never crossed his mind that his actions might worry her.
He assumed that although she no longer fancied Waldo, her affection for him might not run particularly deep either.
But now, Leon thought, he finally understood that he truly mattered to Jessica after all.
Otherwise, Jessica wouldn’t have defied the King’s orders and come all this way on her own.
Leon said, “While I’m no master of arcane formations, I’ve studied them enough to be certain I could leave anytime. I just wasn’t in any particular rush”
“Was this all to lure out the rebels?” Jessica pressed. Including those in Kabury County?
She really should have known. After all, Leon fought through years of warfare. How could he possibly get trapped so easily by the enemy?
Jessica asked, “But you didn’t expect the arcane formation to be tougher than you thought, did you? If things had gone smoothly, you should’ve broken free two days ago, made it back to Kabury yesterday, and joined your soldiers there to wipe out the rebels, right?”
Leon gave a faint smile without answering, but it said it all. Every one of her guesses was spot–on.
“Jessica, don’t be angry with me, alright? I promise I’ll be more careful from now on. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, I won’t put myself in danger. Okay?”
He knew Jessica’s deepest wounds all too well.
Both her parents and two uncles had fallen in battle.
Leon understood why she had always stayed by Garbisch’s side. She never wanted to be the one left behind, anxiously waiting for news.
He never expected that Jessica, who had never shown any sign of liking him, would already see him as family.
“I’m not good with words,” he said quietly, “but from now on, before making any decisions, I’ll always remember that you are waiting for me to come home. Would that put your mind at ease?”
Jessica initially wanted to say, “What you do has nothing to do
with me.”
Jessica opened her mouth to retort, but when she met Leon’s sincere gaze, the words caught in her throat.
If she truly didn’t care, she wouldn’t have defied the King’s orders and traveled all this way.

‘If I care this much, why bother saying things I don’t mean?‘ Jessica thought to herself
Suddenly, faint footsteps echoed in the distance.
Though barely audible, the footsteps were crystal clear to a trained warrior’s ears.
Footsteps approached, more than one set, by the sound of it.
Jessica locked eyes with Leon, who gave her a firm nod in response.
Not far away, Magnus dashed forward in a flash and soon returned with two figures in tow.
One was Ray, whom Jessica had met before, the captain of the Eagle Troops.
The other was a young woman dressed in fitted combat attire, her expression solemn and her movements crisp. It was undoubtedly Mila, the one Jessica had long admired since witnessing her sand table tactics.
Jessica stepped forward first, offering a polite nod. “I’m Jessica. You must be Mila? It’s an honor to meet you.”
