Jessica stared wide–eyed at Elijah, her breath coming in short gasps.
Elijah remained calm and said quietly, “Magnus, Shawn, and all the Eagle Troops know about this. Leon gave the order himself.”
Jessica’s fingers slowly curled into her palm.
She was speechless.
Her heart felt unbearably heavy. Was it excitement, gratitude, or that aching
sorrow?
He confided this to his closest men, worried that even with the command token in her hand, the others might not obey her. But if Magnus, Shawn, and the Eagle Troops acknowledged her authority, then the rest of his soldiers would surely follow.

Jessica asked, “You still haven’t told me why Leon stationed you all here.” Since they trusted her, there was no need for any more formalities.
Jessica pored over the sand table, her attention fixed on the unfamiliar terrain, especially the third stone forest where Leon was headed.
“Ms. Yates, you’re right,” Elijah responded promptly. “Leon anticipated that rebels might raid Kabury County after his departure. That’s why he ordered us to stay and protect the townspeople.”
“Kabury County isn’t particularly wealthy,” Jessica said. “Besides, everyone knows Prince Leon has brought his troo There’s absolutely nothing to gain by raiding the county at this time.”
