Jessica hadn’t insisted that Leon had to say anything. If he chose to stay silent, she would simply pretend not to know a thing.
She just wanted to get her story straight with Leon in advance to prevent any inconsistencies in their statements.
Leon finally admitted, “Yes, it was Anthony.”
Jessica remained silent.
Leon continued, “But I never actually met Anthony. When I followed them inside, both he and the sect leader were already gone. There was a secret passage in the cave. I followed it to the exit, only to find Anthony wounded by the sect leader. I got hit by a poisoned dart trying to save him
“Where did Anthony go afterward?” Jessica inquired.
Leon replied, “He went after the sect leader.” But he knew they’d eventually return to the cave. With so many explosives still inside, he couldn’t rest easy unless he went back himself.
So he had no choice but to set aside the matter with Anthony for now and hurry back to regroup with Jessica and the others.
“So, you don’t actually know where Anthony went afterward, who he met, or what exactly he was involved in, do you?” Jessica asked.
Jessica furrowed her delicate brows, lost in thought.
Leon loved seeing Jessica so absorbed in thought. The sight was like a refreshing breeze sweeping through his heart, filling him with quiet delight.
“Yes.” Leon nodded.
“May 1 offer Your Highness a suggestion?” she asked. By addressing him as “Your Highness,” she made it clear that what she was about to say concerned official matters.
Leon wasn’t entirely pleased, but that was just Jessica’s way.
‘If I don’t listen to her, Jessica won’t have my back anymore,‘ Leon thought.
Leon had lived for over twenty years, yet only today did he realize what an unexpectedly blissful thing it was–to hide behind Jessica, to be the man standing in her shadow.
With Jessica here, his world was whole.
“Go ahead, I’m listening,” Leon said, seizing the opportunity to take her hand in his.
Jessica tried to pull her hand away, but his firm grip made it impossible. With more pressing matters at hand, she thought, ‘There’s no point in struggling,‘ and chose not to waste her energy.
She couldn’t break free anyway.
“Your Highness,” she suggested, “I think we should just tell the truth.”
“Alright, I’ll follow your advice,” he agreed. Last night, he’d been torn. After all, it involved his mother’s family. The implications were far–reaching, and those with ulterior motives could use this against her entire clan.
‘But lies beget more lies,‘ he thought. ‘Since I don’t even know if Anthony is involved, it’s best to let the High Court handle the investigat
“Do you think Lincoln can handle this?” Leon gazed at Jessica, savoring the rare comfort of having someone to consult with.
For all these years, he had never truly experienced it.

Those around him could only report matters and obey his orders, but none dared to discuss things with him,
Only Jessica.
Leon suddenly felt a bitter pang of efivy toward Waldo. For all those years, Jessica had always been by his side. Whenever he faced any bing turn to her for advice.
‘Waldo was truly blessed in those years,’ Leon thought enviously. ‘Thank god that bastard screwed up and Jessica dumped him.
Léon felt an overwhelming sense of relief.
“I’m not sure if he’s capable. There could be several factions at play behind this. But one thing we do know. He works for the King.”
As long as he was the King’s man, all was manageable. His authority came solely from the King.
“Alright, I’ll listen to you. But come back soon, okay? I can’t sleep unless I see you.”
Jessica quickly withdrew her hand, barely resisting the urge to roll her eyes at him.
Leon’s dark eyes sparkled as he gazed at her with utmost sincerity. “I slept so well today. I’ve never felt so at peace. If I could fall asleep holding you every night, I’m certain I’d live to a ripe old age.”
