Chapter 2
Dylan’s face went dark. “Emma, I’m gonna tell you this one last time. Keep acting like a crazy ex, and you’ll make me hate you even more than I already do.”
That’s when Mia glided over, putting on her sweet–little–victim act. “Is Emma upset because she didn’t get to have her special day?”
She pulled out their marriage certificate, trying to shove it in my hands. “Here, why don’t you and Dylan take a cute photo with this?”
“It’s just a piece of paper anyway. As long as you fold it right, no one will be able to read whose
names are on it.”
I didn’t take it, and the thing just fell to the ground.
Mia’s eyes instantly filled with tears as she crouched down to pick it up, voice all shaky. “I’m so sorry… maybe I shouldn’t have come back with Tyler…”
Dylan shot me the dirtiest look. “Emma, I had no idea you were this pathetic. If you can’t handle Mia being in our lives, then we’re done. For real this time.”
“Okay,” I said simply.
My totally calm response seemed to throw him off.
Mia nudged the little boy forward. “Tyler, tell Emma you’re sorry she’s upset.”
But the kid just glared at me and shouted, “No way! She’s the home–wrecker!”
He shoved me hard. “Stop trying to steal my dad!”
Everyone around us started staring, and I could see the judgment in their faces.
[ even heard someone mutter, “Oh my God, mistresses are so bold now–showing up at the County
Clerk’s Office to steal someone’s husband.”
I looked down at the kid and kept my voice steady. “Your dad and I broke up. You don’t have to
worry.”

Chapter 2
“I hope your parents have a really happy marriage.”
Dylan nodded with satisfaction. “That’s more like it. You should’ve been this mature from the start.”
He picked up Tyler, took Mia’s hand, and walked away–the perfect little family unit.
Watching them leave, I thought to myself, “I’m not being mature. I meant every word.”
I found a nearby Starbucks to wait for Garrett.
While scrolling through my phone, a breaking news alert popped up.
“BREAKING: Heir to Sterling Industries abruptly leaves international signing ceremony.”
My heart skipped a beat.
Sterling Industries? The heir? Could that be… Garrett?
I clicked the link and a video started playing.
There was this tall, gorgeous guy on his phone, turning and walking away from what looked like a major business meeting.
Holy shit. That was definitely Garrett.
I could even make out what he was saying: “If either of us chickens out, we owe the other one a
hundred bucks.”
The video cut to a reporter interviewing some older white businessman: “Mr. Sterling left mid–ceremony. Do you consider this disrespectful?”
The guy just shrugged with a smile. “All I can say is, love conquers all. I don’t feel disrespected–I
actually admire the hell out of him for this. It’s very much in line with our values too.”
“We’ll wait here for him to return and finish the signing. This won’t impact our partnership at all…”
I put my phone down, feeling a mix of emotions I couldn’t even name.
