‘Hey! I’m your actual daughter here!” I protested.
During my hospital stay, Garrett had my parents completely charmed.

While I was stuck in bed, they planned our entire wedding–date, venue, everything.
On discharge day, I was walking out with a huge bouquet, feeling great.
But right outside the hospital entrance, there was Dylan’s mom.
She looked terrible–like she’d aged ten years in a few days.
When she saw me, she came running over.
Garrett immediately stepped in front of me protectively.
Dylan’s mom was shaking as she dropped to her knees right there on the sidewalk.
‘eople were walking in and out of the hospital, all staring at the scene.
But she didn’t care. “Emma, please. I’m begging you on my knees.”
Stop being mad at Dylan. Can’t you two work things out?”
The police arrested Dylan today. They say he stole money from the company and you’re pressing charges.”
Emma, please don’t do this to him. You loved Dylan so much–you can’t let him go to prison!”

Then she crawled over to my mom. “We’re supposed to be family! How can you just cancel an engagement like
hat?”
‘I know this Mr. Sterling has more money than us.”
‘But you can’t let money ruin young love!”
My mom looked disgusted.
Some bystanders were catching on and starting to whisper about us, like we were the shallow ones who broke off an engagement for money.

Garrett smiled and said loudly, “Ma’am, your son is already married. He got his marriage license at the County
Clerk’s Office.”
“Now you’re here trying to set him up with my wife?”
“Bigamy is a federal crime, you know.”
Dylan’s mom panicked and blurted out, “That marriage was just for show! They can get divorced anytime!”
Garrett nodded. “Oh, so your family treats marriage like a game–get married and divorced whenever you feel like
it.”
Now everyone understood what was really going on and started mocking Dylan’s mom.
“Oh, so this lady’s just a con artist.”
“Of course she is. What normal person begs on the street like this?”
“The guy’s already married and still trying to have his cake and eat it too. Unbelievable.”
“Someone record this and post it online so everyone can see what kind of crazy we’re dealing with.”
Dylan’s mom panicked, covered her face, and ran away in complete humiliation.
