Chapter 1
Outside the County Clerk’s Office, my fiancé Dylan and I were about to make it official
Out of nowhere, this little boy comes running up and throws his arms around Dylan’s legs.
screaming “Daddy!”
I’m thinking it’s some kind of mix–up or whatever, but Dylan’s face just completely transforms as he scoops the kid up.
“Babe, I swear I literally just found out. When Mia and I broke up five years ago… she was pregnant With my kid.”
“She just got back from Portland, and you know how brutal it is being a single mom. I can’t just
abandon them now.”
I’m standing there completely blindsided when this woman walks over. Has to be Mia Vincent.
Dylan takes her hand without even thinking, and suddenly they look like they stepped out of some family catalog.
“So what’s the deal here?” I asked, trying to keep my voice level
Dylan shifted uncomfortably. “I need to marry Mia. As for us…”
“Look, we’re already here and dressed up. Want me to grab a quick pic of you by the building? You could post it–make it seem like you had your big day.”
Mia was already holding up her phone, grinning like the cat who ate the canary. “This’ll be perfect for the ‘gram!”
Dylan touched my arm, about to serve me the biggest pile of BS. “You’re still my girl, you know that. Mia’s just… she’s family now because of our son.”
‘I missed five years with my son. We’re gonna do the whole family thing for a bit–just until he
settles in.”
‘This kid didn’t ask for any of this mess. He’s been dadless his whole life, and I can’t screw him up
even more.”

Chapter 1
“Let’s just hit pause on our thing for now. Once he’s settled and gets older, I’ll explain everything. Then we’ll do our wedding right–I’m talking full fairy tale mode.”
And just like that, their perfect little family strolled into the County Clerk’s Office to make it official.
I pulled out my phone and called Garrett–the guy who’d been chasing after me for like ten years.
“I’m at the County Clerk’s Office and need someone to marry me. You in?”
“Jesus, Emma, way to spring this on a guy! I literally just landed in Miami for work…” Garrett’s voice was half–laughing, half–panicked on the other end.
My heart sank a little. “Oh. Never mind then.”
Suddenly he went full panic mode. “Wait, wait, wait! Don’t you dare move! I’ll catch the next flight back. They close at five, right? If either of us chickens out, we owe the other one a hundred bucks.”
After hanging up, I let out a long breath and looked around for somewhere to sit and wait.
That’s when I heard someone calling my name with serious attitude. “Emma!”
I looked up to see Dylan walking over–my ex–fiancé as of about twenty minutes ago.
They’d obviously gotten their marriage license already.
Dylan had the kid on his hip and Mia’s hand in his, looking like they’d stepped out of some family
Christmas card.
He set the boy down and got right up in my space, voice low and pissed. “What the hell are you still doing here?”
I kept it simple. “Waiting for someone. Getting married.”
That made him even madder. “Are you seriously being this petty right now? I already explained
everything. We all have history, Emma.”
I just nodded. “Totally get it.”
Dylan grabbed my arm. “If you get it, then go home. Don’t make a scene in front of my son.”
pulled away from him. “I’m literally waiting for my fiancé to get here so we can get married.”
