Chapter 2
I smiled and said, “This is indeed a spot that others can’t even dream of getting, but I’m smart enough to have gotten into college. What business is it of yours?”
Jacob angrily shot to his feet, grabbing the door bolt and charging at me: “You bitch! I’m giving that spot to Aurora. How dare you sell it to someone else without discussing it with me?”
I immediately ran outside, crying and shouting as I fled: “Help! My husband is furious that I sold the college acceptance letter to pay for his treatment, and he wants to beat me to death!”
It was noon, and the villagers were all resting. Hearing my voice, everyone gathered around.
Seeing the healthy Jacob, someone immediately screamed: “Jacob, weren’t you paralyzed? How did you suddenly get better?”
Hearing this, Jacob’s steps faltered as he remembered his deliberate act of faking paralysis just days ago.
He froze, and the door bolt in his hand crashed to the ground.
I threw myself into the arms of Natalia Nelson, the director of the women’s center, crying: “Ms. Nelson, you have to help me. My husband actually faked being paralyzed to force me to sell my college acceptance letter to Aurora. I wanted to help him get
treatment, so I sold the acceptance letter to someone else at a high price, but now they want to beat me to death.”
Natalia was an upright person and immediately joined the villagers in angrily cursing and condemning Jacob.
Aurora glared at me resentfully, then quickly came up with an idea.
She said: “Stop scolding Jacob, everyone. Actually, I cured Jacob’s legs yesterday. We just hadn’t had time to tell Kennedy yet–we wanted to wait until she got her acceptance letter to give her a big surprise. That’s why we were angry that Kennedy sold the acceptance letter. This is all a misunderstanding.”
Hearing her excuse, all the villagers calmed down.
I hadn’t originally planned to use the fake illness incident to directly break ties with Jacob, so I sighed: “You actually kept such wonderful news from me. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you two were the married couple.”
Someone among the surrounding villagers immediately chimed in: “She’s right. Aurora is always going to Jacob’s house. I think they’re the ones who act like a real married couple.”
Another person said: “Kennedy is so beautiful and ambitious. If it weren’t for having no parents, how could she possibly have married Jacob? Jacob, you better not let her down.”
Jacob nodded repeatedly in agreement, his face darkening, while Aurora blushed and lowered her head.
After commenting for a while, the villagers all went home to
rest.
Seeing no one around, Jacob said coldly: “Kennedy, do you think you can rebel just because you got into college? You embarrassed Aurora in the village today. If you don’t apologize to Aurora and compensate her five hundred dollars, you won’t be a member of the Wood family anymore.”
Looking at the two people who had brutally killed me in my previous life, I said calmly: “Thank you for your kind offer. I indeed don’t want to be a member of the Wood family. Ariana arranged a job for me at the garment factory. I’m actually supposed to report there today. From now on, I won’t be coming back.”
