Chapter 6
When Eliza woke again, Liam was beside her bed, his eyes frighteningly red.
He grabbed her hand, his voice shaking. “Liza, I swear I didn’t know there would be an avalanche…
I’m sorry, so sorry…”
His fingers were ice–cold, but his palms were sweaty, as if terrified she might disappear.
“Hit me, yell at me, anything…”
The door suddenly burst open. Maya rushed in, her eyes swollen like peaches. “Mrs. Harris, it’s all my fault! Please don’t blame Mr. Harris…”
She sobbed dramatically, as if she were the victim. “You don’t know how worried he was about you. When he heard about the avalanche, he ran into danger to find you. He’s covered in injuries
himself…”
“Enough.” Liam cut her off, turning to wrap an arm around her. “This has nothing to do with you. The doctor said you shouldn’t cry–it’s bad for the baby.”
Eliza watched the scene and laughed.
How ironic. She’d just returned from death’s door, yet he was worried about another woman
“crying.”
“Get out,” her voice was hoarse. “Both of you. Get out.”
Liam froze. “Liza…”
“I said get out!”
She grabbed the water glass from the bedside table and smashed it on the floor, glass shattering
everywhere.
Liam finally left with Maya, looking back at her repeatedly as he closed the door.
In the days that followed, Liam tried everything to please her.
Flowers flown in from overseas, limited–edition handbags, constant attention… But Eliza remained

silent.
She wasn’t angry with him anymore, but she didn’t smile at him either.
She looked at him like a stranger.
On the day of her discharge, Liam was waiting at the hospital entrance.
Eliza didn’t want to get in his car and turned to walk away.
Suddenly, he pulled a riding crop from the trunk and held it out to her. “Liza, hit me.”
She stared at him.
“If hitting me will make you feel better, if it means you’ll forgive me…” his voice was rough. “Go
ahead.”
He paused, then softened his tone. “We have a family dinner today. Can you stop being mad at me?
Please?”
She looked at him, almost wanting to laugh.
Did he still think they were the same as before?
That he could make a mistake, she’d get angry, he’d sweet–talk her, and she’d forgive him?
He was wrong. Completely wrong.
She didn’t take the crop but got into his car.
She hadn’t forgiven him. She just… didn’t care anymore.
During the drive, Liam kept trying to make conversation.
He talked about work, childhood stories, even brought up their first date when she’d fallen into a fountain. Before, she would have blushed and covered his mouth.
Now, she just stared out the window in silence.
The Harris family mansion was brightly lit.
As soon as Eliza entered the living room, she saw Maya sitting on the sofa while Liam’s grandmother

held her hand affectionately.
Liam immediately grabbed Eliza’s wrist. “Grandma insisted on seeing her. I didn’t tell you because I
was afraid you’d be upset…”
She gently pulled her hand away. “It’s fine.”
She truly didn’t care anymore.
Liam’s grandmother smiled warmly as she held Maya’s hand, but her face turned cold when she
looked at Eliza. “All these years married and not a single child! Maya’s different–such a sweet girl.
You must visit Grandma often…”
Eliza’s hand froze mid–air. Once upon a time, the old woman had treated her like a real granddaughter.
When had it changed? Probably the moment she’d said “I don’t want children.”
But that decision had never been hers alone.
She remembered that rainy night after their engagement when pre–wedding anxiety had her hiding at her friend’s place, avoiding Liam.
He’d searched the entire city in the rain, finally breaking down her friend’s door at 3 AM, soaking wet as he knelt before her: “Liza, what did I do wrong?”
She’d sobbed, barely able to breathe. “I’m scared… of pain… of marriage… especially of having children…”
What had Liam said then?
He’d cupped her face and promised: “Then we won’t have any. If family pressures us, I’ll say it’s my fault–that I can’t have children.”
Now, that same man who had sworn he “couldn’t have children” was carefully preparing milk powder for Maya.
