Chapter 2
Eliza stared at the signed divorce papers, her heart seized by an invisible hand. Maya had actually
done it.
Good. Now they could be a perfect family of three, while she, Eliza Quinn, would live for herself
from this day forward.
“Liza, what gift? The one you wanted most?” Liam suddenly leaned closer, brows furrowed. “Why
didn’t I hear about it?”
He reached for the envelope, but she quickly pulled it away.
He raised an eyebrow. “So, having little secrets with your hubby, huh?”
Eliza forced a bitter smile. “Weren’t you the one hiding her pregnancy for three months until I found
out?”
His expression darkened.“Didn’t we agree not to talk about this again? I told you why I kept the baby….”
He sighed, voice gentler.“I only hid it because I was afraid of losing you.”
Afraid of losing her?
But Liam, What you fear most is what you’ll lose.
ya suddenly teared up. “Mrs. Harris… It’s all my fault… I never should’ve saved Mr. Harris that ght, and I really didn’t mean for his grandmother to find out about the pregnancy… I swear, I never wanted to come between you two… I didn’t…”
Her tears hovered, ready to fall, as if she’d suffered some terrible injustice.
Liam immediately turned to comfort her, his voice impossibly gentle. “Hey, don’t blame yourself. None of this is your fault.”
Eliza couldn’t bear to watch and turned to leave.
Only then did he notice, quickly following to ask, “Liza, where are you going?”

“Just step out for something”
He frowned. “It’s pouring. I’ll drive you.”
Then he turned back to give instructions to the staff: “Maya can’t get chilled, so turn up the heat a bit.
She hasn’t had much of an appetite lately–oh, and no ginger in the soup, it makes her nauseous.”
For a full ten minutes, he meticulously covered every detail, terrified of missing any pregnancy
precaution.
Eliza stood in the doorway, silently watching him.
Finally, he finished and got in the car.
Eliza looked at him and suddenly smiled. “Liam, you’re going to be a great father.”
Liam froze, seemingly shocked by her words.
He grabbed her wrist, his voice filled with restrained pain: “Liza, you know you’re the only one I
want a child with. I didn’t have a choice. Please… don’t say that, okay?”
Eliza didn’t respond, just silently stared out the window. The car fell into complete silence.
As they drove, Liam tried to ease the tension: “Liza, it’s pouring–what could be so important??”
Just as she was about to answer, his phone rang.
“Mr. Harris… my stomach suddenly hurts so bad…” Maya’s tearful voice came through the speaker.
Liam’s face instantly changed. “Don’t worry, I’m coming right back!”
He hung up and turned to her.: ““We’re nearly there. Would you be okay taking an Uber from here,
Liza?”
“Sure,” she answered calmly, opening the door.
The downpour instantly soaked her completely. She stood by the roadside, watching his car speed
away, and suddenly laughed.
You were this close to the truth, Liam
The storm was too fierce to catch a Uber. Eliza walked alone through the downpour, her umbrella

broken by the wind, rain mixing with tears that blurred her vision.
By the time she finally got to the city hall, she was a complete mess.
“Hi, I’m here to divorce,” she handed over the perfectly dry divorce papers she’d carefully protected.
The clerk looked at her, then at the agreement: “After a one–month cooling–off period, you can come
back for your divorce certificate.”
When she left, the rain had stopped. Perhaps life after divorce would be like this day – sunshine
after the storm.
When she returned to the mansion, the hall was empty.
From upstairs came Liam’s gentle voice: “The little prince met a fox…”
He was reading a bedtime story to Maya’s unborn baby.
Eliza’s mind was a blur as she collapsed into bed. When she finally woke up, her throat was on fire.
“Water…” she called several times, but all she could hear was the storytelling from the next room.
‘Mr. Harris, I hope the baby will be like you–handsome and smart…” Maya’s voice was sickeningly sweet.
‘Hey, don’t say that,” Liam said softly. “Being like you is amazing–you’re sweet, gentle… and so
oure.”
Even without seeing them, Eliza could imagine Maya’s blushing face. They were like a real married couple, weaving dreams for their soon–to–be–born child.
She reached for her water but knocked the glass over. It shattered.
She bent down to clean it up, but a wave of dizziness hit her–and everything went black.
Her palm was cut and bleeding, but she gritted her teeth, cleaned it up bit by bit, then found fever nedication and took it.
Throughout it all, the laughter from next door never stopped.
Lying back in bed, Eliza suddenly remembered her college days when she had a fever. Liam had :limbed over the wall into the women’s dormitory at night and stayed by her bedside for three days

and nights.
Back then, he’d said: “Liza, seeing you in pain hurts me even more..”
What about now, Liam? Do you still remember those words?
Chapter 3
“Liza! Thank God, you’re awake!”
When Eliza opened her eyes the next morning, Liam was lying beside her.
He touched her forehead, his eyes full of worry. “Liza, why didn’t you call me? You had a fever–do
you know how scared I was when I saw you like that?”
What was the point of calling? You were a little busy playing house with Maya and the baby, weren’t
you?
“I’m fine now,” she firmly pushed his hand away.
Liam frowned. “Babe, Are you unhappy now?”
“No.”
“You little liar–I can tell you’re upset.” He kissed her hair gently. “Didn’t you say you always wanted
to go horseback riding? Let’s go today, hmm?”
He started helping her get up and ready, his movements as gentle as they used to be.
She didn’t want him picking up on anything, so she just let him be.
Just as they were about to leave, Maya appeared timidly in the doorway. “Mr. Harris, Mrs. Harris…
you’re going horseback riding? That sounds so fun. I’ve never been before–could I come too?”
She stroked her swollen belly, looking at Liam with hopeful eyes.
“No, you’re pregnant.”
Maya bit her lower lip. “But I really want to go… staying cooped up at home all day isn’t good for the baby either…”
Eliza didn’t want to hear more and turned to leave.
She knew Liam too well–he could never say no to a sweet, tearful request.
Sure enough, by the time she reached the door, she heard Liam’s resigned sigh behind her: “Fine, but

you have to follow me the entire time.”
Liam personally helped her into the vehicle, one hand constantly supporting her lower back as if she were made of glass.
After they arrived, his attentiveness continued, completely forgetting who he’d originally planned to
accompany.
‘Watch your step, sweetie.”
‘The sun’s really strong today–don’t forget your hat, okay?”
‘Take it slow, no need to rush. I don’t want you getting tired.”
Each reminder was like a dull knife, slicing into Eliza’s heart.
She quietly walked to the stable and chose a gentle mare, expertly saddling it.
Liam himself had taught her these skills. On her twentieth birthday, he’d taken her to his private
ranch where they’d ridden all day.
But the man who once taught her to ride now had eyes only for another woman–adjusting Maya’s safety gear, personally setting her stirrups, ensuring she wasn’t the least bit uncomfortable.
He held Maya’s reins the entire time, never letting go for a moment.
Until his phone rang in his pocket. He took it out, his brow furrowing slightly.
Maya quickly said with a gentle smile, “It’s okay, Mr. Harris. Please go handle your work. Don’t worry about me”
Liam wasn’t convinced, checking multiple times that she was secure before walking aside to take the
call.
Eliza pulled her horse to a stop at the edge of the field, silently watching the scene.
“Mrs. Harris,” Maya suddenly rode close, a sweet smile on her face. “I’ve always wondered what it looks like when two horses slam into each other. Bet it’s not pretty. You ever seen it?”
Without waiting for an answer, she dug her heels into her horse’s sides. The two mares crashed into each other, both rearing up in panic-

Eliza gripped the reins tightly, but couldn’t control her completely spooked horse as it neighed wildly and charged toward the fence.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Maya “accidentally” let go of her reins and fall from her horse.
“Maya!”
Liam practically flew across the field, catching her before she hit the ground.
At the same moment, a herd of startled horses broke through the fence, galloping wildly toward
Eliza!
“Liam… help me!”
Eliza shouted amid the violent bouncing, her voice drowning in the chaos of thundering hooves.
She watched as he lifted the unconscious Maya and ran toward the exit without looking back.
The wind rushed in her ears as she hit the ground hard., Eliza suddenly remembered what Liam had said at this same ranch on her twentieth birthday: “Liza, whenever you call for me, I’ll always turn back.”
Before her vision blurred, the last thing she saw was Liam’s back as he carried Maya to the car, so urgent, so hurried.
Sharp pain radiated from her ribs, but nothing compared to the feeling of her heart being torn apart.
Eliza curled up on the sandy ground, listening to the approaching hoofbeats, and slowly closed her
eyes.
