Chapter 6
Avery gently shook her head, her eyes filled with weariness and resignation.
“I know you had your reasons, and I’ve never blamed you. Besides, things have already progressed to this point–regret won’t change anything now. I’m only 22, still so young. I can start over.”
Seeing her forced smile, Nathan stroked her head.
“That’s right. You have your whole life ahead of you, and you’ll definitely meet someone better.”
Over the next few days, Avery continued recovering in the hospital.
Occasionally, she would overhear gossip from the nurses making their rounds.
“Did
you hear the VIP room upstairs was booked by the CEO of Landau Group? No wonder he’s so
generous. I think his fiancée is staying there. He never leaves her side–feeding her soup, bringing
her water, buying gifts to cheer her up!”
“Apparently they conceived before marriage–they already have a baby and are getting married in a few days. I heard the wedding dress and rings alone cost millions. He’s planning a globally broadcast wedding ceremony. He must really love her to his core to go to such lengths!”
Listening to their admiring tones, Avery recalled the plan she’d overheard outside the club that day and closed her eyes.
Jake was making their wedding so grand and elaborate–he must be confident that Hannah would accept his proposal.
After waiting for so many years, meticulously planning this elaborate charade, he was finally getting
his wish.
And the clingy girl he found so annoying would disappear forever after the wedding, never to bother him again.
It was a win–win situation for him, certainly worth celebrating in grand style.
As Avery drifted in her thoughts, her phone rang several times.
Coming back to reality, she saw the name on the screen, paused for a few seconds, and then

answered.
“Avery, I heard you were hospitalized. How are you feeling lately?”
It was one of Nathan’s friends calling, making small talk in circles.
Avery sensed something was off, and finally, he hesitantly revealed his true purpose.
“I heard Nathan and Jake got into a fight? Their relationship seems strained now. We’ve all tried to mediate, but nothing’s working. Do you know what happened?”
After a long silence, she explained the situation concisely.
The friend sighed after hearing her account.
“Brothers for so many years, and they fall out over a misunderstanding–it’s ridiculous. Avery, could
you help us out? We’re setting up a meeting tonight. Bring your brother, and we can clear up any
misunderstandings face to face.”
Avery knew that besides family, these lifelong friends meant the world to her brother.
Not wanting Nathan to distance himself from them because of her, she agreed to the request.
