Chapter 4
Seeing Jake suddenly appear at the doorway, Avery startled.
“It’s nothing.”
Despite her denial, Jake sensed something was wrong, fixing her with a steady gaze.
“Since when did you start lying? What flight are you booking? Where are you going?”
Faced with his questioning, Avery remained silent for a few seconds before responding flatly.
“You’re getting married soon. Where I go shouldn’t matter to you anymore, should it?”
Jake had been somewhat suspicious, but hearing her response, he became convinced this was just another of her games. His expression returned to its cool detachment.
“You’re right, it doesn’t concern me. Hannah was worried about you and asked me to check in.”
“I’m fine, Jake. You can go now.”
Her unusually distant attitude caught him off guard.
Just as he was about to speak, a nurse knocked and entered, announcing it was time for Avery’s follow–up examination.
With her injured leg, Avery struggled to get out of bed on her own, nearly falling.
Jake quickly steadied her. She thanked him softly, then tried to wheel herself away independently.
Seeing her covered in injuries and struggling to move, he finally relented and offered to help.
“Where’s the examination room? I’ll take you there.”
“No need. I can manage.”
Avery refused, but Jake insisted, pushing her wheelchair out of the room.
Just as they reached the ground floor, they ran into Hannah.

The moment Jake saw her, he immediately let go of the wheelchair and went to greet her.
They were on a slope, and the wheelchair, without brakes applied, began speeding downhill.
‘Ah!”
Seeing she was about to crash into a planter, Avery’s heart raced as she forced herself to roll off the
wheelchair.
She fell to the ground, scraping her hands and knees, which began to bleed.
She groaned in pain, clutching her reopened wounds as cold sweat beaded on her forehead.
Hannah was also startled and quickly moved to check on Avery.
The wheelchair had smashed apart in the collision. Looking at Avery’s injuries, Hannah tugged at
Jake’s hand.
‘Jake, Avery’s hurt and her wheelchair is broken. Can you carry her to get her wounds dressed?”
At this, Jake’s expression shifted subtly.
He glanced at Avery writhing in pain, then looked back at Hannah and shook his head.
‘I can’t. I’m about to get married–it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to carry another woman.”
Each word pierced Avery’s heart like a needle. She dug her nails into her palms until blood seeped
hrough her fingers.
Unable to convince him, Hannah asked Jake to fetch a new wheelchair instead.
This time, he agreed.
Once he was out of sight, Hannah offered Avery a handkerchief.
‘That’s just how Jake is–he only listens to me. Don’t take it personally. I feel partly responsible for your injury at the hotel that day. My baby’s been running a fever, so I couldn’t come check on you myself and sent Jake instead. I never expected another accident. Though unintentional, we’re clearly at fault here. I’m truly sorry.”
Avery didn’t understand what game Hannah was playing today. Fighting through the pain, she struggled to her feet.

“Hannah, I’ve already told you–I won’t pursue Jake anymore. Whether you’re just putting on an act or genuinely getting married, I don’t care.”
With that, she began limping away.
But Hannah wasn’t finished. She hurried after Avery.
“So you know Jake and I are just pretending…”
Mid–sentence, a loud splash made Avery turn around.
Seeing Hannah who had accidentally fallen into the decorative pool and was struggling to stay afloat, Avery hesitated briefly before extending her hand..
Jake, returning at that moment, saw the scene and sprinted over, diving into the pool to rescue
Hannah.
As he pulled her out, noting her pale complexion and coughing, he turned to Avery with fury in his
eyes.
“I was gone for just a few minutes, and you deliberately pushed Hannah into the water?”
Avery was stunned that Jake would blame her for this.
Before she could explain, Jake gave her no chance.
Holding Hannah in his arms, he stood up and shoved Avery into the pool.
‘I’ve tolerated your pursuit all these years, but Hannah is my bottom line. If you dare hurt her again,
don’t expect me to show any mercy!”
His cold, menacing tone mixed with the icy water filling Avery’s ears.
Blood from her injuries spread through the water, creating a crimson cloud around her.
She couldn’t swim and despite desperately flailing, she couldn’t reach the edge.
The oxygen in her lungs gradually depleted, her face turned purple, and her heartbeat slowed.
Waves of dizziness washed over her, pulling her consciousness into endless darkness…
