When Damon woke up, I couldn’t wait to ask him, “Who really saved me back then?”
Damon’s whole body went rigid, and he turned away, unable to meet my eyes.
“Astra, what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
My eyes darkened. “Stop lying to me. You can’t even swim. You weren’t the one who saved me at all,
were you?”
Damon pressed his lips together and stayed silent for a long time.
I stomped my foot in frustration. “Just tell me! Who was it really?”
Damon fell silent again.
Just when I thought he’d never answer, I heard him whisper a name so quietly I could barely make it
out.
My whole body shook.
Damon gave a self–deprecating laugh. “After Rhett pulled you out, he ran to get the pack healer.
When you woke up and saw me, you got the wrong idea. I was an idiot and didn’t correct you. I’m
sorry.”
I stared at him in shock.
I never would have guessed it was actually Rhett.
I didn’t catch what Damon said after that–all I could think about was finding Rhett and setting the record straight.
But when I opened the door, there was Rhett standing right outside. I had no idea how much he’d
heard,
I couldn’t hold back anymore and threw myself into his arms, my voice breaking. “Why didn’t you tell me it was you?”
Rhett held me tight and let out a frustrated sigh.

“If I’d known you fell for him because of that, I would’ve told you the truth no matter what. I can’t
believe I almost lost you over this.”
The thought made me shudder too.

Thank the Moon Goddess for looking out for me. Somehow my random choice had been the right
one.
I wanted to settle the score with Talia for pushing me into the water, but she’d vanished. My people
couldn’t find her anywhere.
Until three days later, on my mating day with Rhett.
She showed up with witches and hunters and stormed the palace.
The Quinn family had staged a rebellion.
That’s when it all clicked–why she’d dared to disrespect me so many times, even pushing me into
the Moon Pool at Rowan’s party.

them.

Seeing years of planning crumble in a single day, Talia lost it completely. She grabbed a silver blade and charged at me, but Damon appeared just in time and slit her throat.
I stared at him in shock. If the Reed family was part of the rebellion, why would he help me?
Later I found out that Damon was the one who’d leaked the rebellion plans to us.
Even though the Reed family were traitors, Damon had earned merit for his intelligence.
When it came time for rewards, he refused everything and volunteered to serve as a border guard to atone for his family’s crimes.
