Meredith jerked her hand back in fright and said, “I only ran because I was afraid you’d get mad. Are you crazy? Why would I want your hair?!”

The commotion quickly drew the attention of nearby classmates, who all looked over.
Meredith felt thoroughly embarrassed and snapped angrily, “Whatever! I can’t be bothered with you!”
With that, she once again fled in a panic.
Valerie looked at the hair in her hand, feeling something was off. She pondered what someone could do with a lock of hair.
Adrienne also had a strange expression and said, “What would she want your hair for? I mean, other than DNA testing, there’s not much you can do with it. Wait, what if she wants to use it to fake evidence of you being at the scene of some crime and frame you for it? That would be terrifying!”

Meredith normally never talked to her. Today’s strange behavior made her even more cautious.

“Don’t worry about it.” Juliette examined the hair. “You’re sure this is really Valerie’s and not some random one you picked up to fool me?”
Meredith snapped, “Of course it’s hers! If you don’t believe me, go pull it yourself!”
If Juliette could get close to Valerie, she wouldn’t have needed Meredith.
Stashing the hair away, Juliette said, “I’ll have it tested first. If it’s really Valerie’s, then I’ll tell you the secret.”
“Are you messing with me?” Meredith snapped.
Juliette said arrogantly, “Why would I? But I have to make sure you’re not playing me. Not everyone can know this secret. Relax. If it’s real, you’ll get your reward. Just keep today’s events to yourself. This is your thank–you gift.”
Meredith’s phone pinged. She opened it and saw a transfer of six hundred dollars.
For a student like Meredith, six hundred dollars was no small sum. And Meredith hadn’t gotten any prize money yet from her singing competition. This

Valerie pretended to consider for a moment, then smiled and said, “Alright, I’ll go. Gotta hang up now.”
Russell finally got a solid yes. He was overjoyed and hung up feeling relieved.
