.
In the ICU, Lily was pale but breathing steadily.
The doctor said the worst was over, thanks to the timely blood transfusion.
Camden rubbed his temples, looking at Lily’s face, but Maya’s image kept flashing in his mind–her pursed lips and trembling eyelashes during the blood draw.
Over the years of marriage, Maya had never been particularly healthy. After losing that much blood suddenly, how was she doing?
At that thought, Camden suddenly stood up.
Lily weakly opened her eyes, looking at him. “Uncle Cam.”
Camden forced a smile, gently stroking her hair. “It’s okay, I’ll get you some water. Rest up.”
“Come back quickly, Uncle Cam. I’m scared being alone.”
Leaving the room, Camden hurried toward the blood donation center, his heart racing for some reason.
The door to the blood center was half open, completely empty inside.
A nurse wheeled past with a cart and noticed his confusion. “Looking for someone?”
Camden nodded, pointing inside. “The woman who donated blood earlier… the one who looked really pale.”
The nurse frowned, thinking back. “Oh, her? She’s already left. She was pretty wobbly on her feet, didn’t look good at all. I suggested she rest for a bit, but she insisted on leaving.”
After the nurse left, Camden pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over Maya’s number. The screen showed 2:30
- AM.
Would calling this late be inappropriate? As he hesitated, hurried footsteps approached from behind.
A nurse rushed over. “Mr. Harrington, your niece is awake and says she’s having chest pains. You should come back.”
Hearing this, Camden didn’t hesitate. He turned and followed the medical team.
He told himself Maya was tough–she’d probably taken a cab home. He could contact her tomorrow.
She needed rest after donating blood. Calling now would just disturb her.
The next evening at eight, Lily’s condition had finally improved.

Camden stood by the hospital corridor window, pulling out his phone. Maya hadn’t sent a single message since last night.
This was so unlike her. Even during their worst fights, Maya always maintained basic communication when
necessary.
Camden frowned and dialed Maya’s number.
The wait before the call connected felt endless, but instead of Maya’s calm voice, he heard a mechanical recording.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check the number and try again.”
Camden stood frozen, his fingers stiffly redialing. The same cold message played again, like some kind of final judgment.
“That’s impossible,” he muttered, quickly scrolling through his contacts for another number–Maya’s colleague at the
museum.
When the call connected, the person sounded confused. “Mr. Harrington? Why are you calling me all of a sudden?”
“Maya’s phone isn’t working. Is she at the museum?”
‘Maya? She submitted her resignation two weeks ago and already left. You didn’t know?”
The colleague’s words made Camden’s body go rigid, his grip tightening on the phone.
After hanging up, an unprecedented fear gripped his heart. He rushed into the hospital room and grabbed his jacket
‘Lily, I need to go home.”
‘What’s wrong?”
Maya’s number is disconnected. Something’s not right.”
Lily said dismissively, “Maybe she just changed her number. Deal with it tomorrow, Uncle Cam. I want you to stay vith me.”
ily took his hand and nuzzled his knuckles with her cheek.
Camden had never been able to resist Lily’s acts of affection.
Okay,” he compromised. “I’ll stay with you.”
o Camden spent another entire night at the hospital.
t wasn’t until the next morning that he finally went home.
The door opened to an empty house.

“Maya?” His voice echoed through the hollow living room with no response.
Camden searched room by room. The master bedroom closet door was wide open, Maya’s side almost completely empty except for a few out–of–season clothes hanging forlornly.
All her skincare products and jewelry had vanished from the vanity.
The phone suddenly rang in the living room. Camden practically ran back.
He grabbed his phone–an unknown number on the screen.
“Hello? Maya?” he asked urgently.
A professional woman’s voice came through. “Hello, this is Rodriguez & Associates Law Firm. We’re calling to confirm completion of your divorce proceedings. After the divorce was finalized between you and Ms. Maya Sterling, do you have any questions about the property settlement agreement?”
Camden’s blood turned to ice. “What divorce proceedings?”
“Our records show the divorce between you and Ms. Maya Sterling was finalized last Wednesday. Ms. Sterling’s settlement agreement indicated she voluntarily waived all marital assets…”
CRASH!
The phone slipped from Camden’s hands and crashed to the floor.
