Chapter 7
Over the next few days, Maya was busy preparing to leave. She was folding her last piece of clothing into her suitcase when a sudden wave of dizziness nearly knocked her off her feet.
After catching her breath, she sat down in the chair. This was the third time today.
Her eyes landed on her wedding photo with Camden sitting on the vanity.
In the frame, she was beaming with joy. Now that smile looked so fucking naive and stupid.
Her hand drifted to her flat stomach, and suddenly she realized something. Her entire body went rigid.
Her period was two weeks late.

The realization hit her like a truck. Maya’s face went ghost white. Her cycle was always clockwork–this had never happened before.
She rushed to the pharmacy downstairs, bought a pregnancy test, and locked herself in the bathroom. As she watched the two pink lines slowly appear, all she could hear was her own panicked heartbeat.
She was pale as death, gently touching her stomach, barely able to process that there was actually a life growing inside her.
She was pregnant. With Camden’s baby.
But how could this be happening now, of all times?
She’d already prepared to divorce Camden, already planned to leave. Getting pregnant now was like some cruel cosmic joke…
She had no idea what to do next. The panic and anxiety were suffocating..
Her phone buzzed–Camden calling.
Maya stared at his name flashing on the screen for what felt like forever before it went silent.
Then a text popped up.
[Working late tonight, don’t wait up.]
Seeing Camden’s message, Maya could spot the bullshit from a mile away.
She let out a bitter laugh. Same tired excuse, over and over. He couldn’t even be bothered to come up with something
new.

Chapter 7
Late that night, Maya curled up on the couch, scrolling through forums about single moms working abroad, her mind racing.
If she kept this baby, it would mean she’d never be free of Camden.
Her future would always be tangled up with his.
But getting rid of the baby… her heart ached at the thought.
Her parents had died young–she’d always been alone. Before finding out about Camden and Lily, she’d dreamed of having a child, being a happy family of three.
But Camden had been using and lying to her from day one. That life would never be possible.
At 1 AM, the sound of the door unlocking woke her from her half–sleep.
Camden stumbled in, reeking of alcohol.
He made a phone call, his voice slurred and choked with emotion. “You don’t know how much I’m suffering. I only love Lily. If my dad hadn’t threatened me using Lily, I never would have married Maya.”
“Just thinking about my child’s mother being Maya instead of Lily makes me sick to my stomach.”
“But I have no choice. Only after Maya has the baby can Lily and I finally be together without any obstacles.”
Maya clamped her hand over her mouth to keep from making a sound. Her stomach cramped violently, as if the baby inside could already sense its father’s cruel rejection.
This conversation showed her just how heartless Camden really was, and finally gave her the answer she’d been struggling to find.
The next morning, Maya came downstairs only to find Camden sitting in the living room.
He was perched on the couch, and in front of him was the pregnancy test she’d thrown away in the bathroom last night.
Maya’s heart dropped as she rushed over, staring at Camden nervously.
‘What’s this?” He looked at her with a deep frown.
Maya tried to stay calm, not letting Camden see anything suspicious. “It’s my coworker’s. She accidentally left it in my purse.”
It was such a lame excuse, Maya had no idea if Camden would buy it.
‘Really?”
“Yeah.” She forced a smile.

Hearing her answer, Camden visibly relaxed.
That unconscious reaction cut Maya deep once again.
He really didn’t want to have a baby with her. After five years of marriage, she’d never been anything more than a
tool to him.
If that’s how it was, what was there left to hesitate about?
After breakfast, Maya grabbed her purse to head out.
Camden, who usually ignored her completely, suddenly asked, “You going somewhere?”
“Yeah.”
“Where?”
“Coffee with a friend.”
Camden stared into her eyes. “I’ll drive you.”
He started to get up.
But Maya refused.
“No need. I can get there myself.”
With that, she turned and left.
Camden stood there watching her go, feeling like something was different, but he couldn’t put his finger on what.
At 3 PM, Maya stood outside the women’s clinic, clutching her appointment slip.
A nurse called gently, “Mrs. Sterling, you can come in now.”
In the examination room, the doctor asked routine questions. “When was your last period? Are you sure you don’t want this baby? Is anyone here with you?”
Maya answered mechanically, staring at the blurry spot on the ultrasound screen–her and Camden’s child, a life that would never be born.
“Would you like to see?” The doctor turned the screen toward her.
Maya shook her head, then changed her mind at the last second. She stared intently at the screen, her eyes stinging.
“… Could I get a picture?”
The doctor sighed. “Since it’s not meant to be, don’t blame yourself too much. You have the right to choose whether to

have this baby.”
Maya turned away as tears started falling.
The procedure was quick, almost painless–just a deep, hollow emptiness spreading from her uterus through her entire body.
Maya lay in the recovery room, staring at the black and white ultrasound photo, her heart numb with pain.
When she got home that evening, Camden wasn’t there. The house was eerily quiet.
Maya went to the study and took down that box from the top shelf.
She placed today’s ultrasound photo inside the box where Camden kept all his treasures from Lily, closed the lid, and put it back.
As she left the study, her phone buzzed with a notification that her visa was ready. Without hesitation, Maya booked a flight for 5 PM the next day.
