Chapter 3
Their lips crashed together, kissing like Maya didn’t even exist.
Maya stood frozen at the kitchen counter, the scissors slipping from her fingers and clattering to the floor.
She clamped her hand over her mouth, forcing herself to stay silent, not to make a single sound or show any reaction. She stayed put in the kitchen, giving them all the time they needed for their little makeout session.
When she finally walked back out, Lily’s cheeks were flushed pink and Camden was lounging on the couch looking completely satisfied, gazing at Lily with that warm, loving smile she’d never seen before.
After breakfast, Lily casually asked, “Maya, are you going out today?”
“Yeah.” She needed to hit the embassy to sort out her visa.
“Where are you headed? I’ll come with you!” Lily immediately volunteered.
Maya didn’t hesitate. “Nah, it’s just boring work stuff. You’d be bored out of your mind.”
“But I want to hang out with you!” Lily stuck out her bottom lip in that pouty expression Maya used to find adorable. Now it just made her skin crawl.
“Since Lily wants to go, we’ll all go together. I don’t have anything else planned today anyway.”
Camden’s tone made it clear this wasn’t a request.
When they left the house, Lily naturally linked arms with Maya on the left while Camden walked on her right.
The September sun was still brutal, making everything feel dizzy and surreal.
‘Maya, you look kinda pale. You feeling okay?” Lily asked with fake concern.
‘I’m fine.” Maya brushed her off.
They were cruising along the highway when Lily suddenly clutched her stomach with a pained gasp. “Uncle Cam, oh God, it hurts!”
Camden immediately pulled over.
‘What’s wrong? Where does it hurt?” Lily’s face went white as she broke out in a cold sweat. “My stomach… it’s killing me.”
Without a second’s hesitation, Camden basically dragged Maya out of the car.
‘Lily’s really sick. Handle your stuff yourself–I’m taking her to the ER.”

Chapter 3
Maya stood there in the middle of the road, watching their car disappear into the distance. The sun was blinding, making her ears ring. The traffic light cycled from green to red, but she didn’t notice, just started walking forward in a daze.
The screech of brakes pierced the air. The next second, Maya’s body was slammed with crushing force. In that moment, she swore she could see something shatter into a million pieces.
When she came to, the sharp smell of disinfectant made Maya’s face scrunch up.
She tried moving her fingers and immediately felt shooting pain race up her right arm.
“You’re awake.” A nurse was adjusting her IV drip.
‘You’re incredibly lucky. That was a nasty accident, but you only ended up with a broken arm and a mild
concussion.”
Maya’s mind flashed back to the moments before the crash. “My phone–did anyone call me?”
The nurse’s expression got a little weird. “We contacted your emergency contact like we’re supposed to. Your husband didn’t pick up, but he texted back. We told him about the accident, but… he never showed up.‘
When the nurse finished talking, Maya closed her eyes, her voice barely a whisper. “Got it. Thanks.”
After the nurse left, Maya sat alone in her hospital bed.
Her phone buzzed with a message from Camden.
Still at the hospital with Lily. Won’t be home tonight, don’t wait up.]
Maya didn’t bother replying. Instead, she dialed a different number.
I need you to fast–track my divorce. As quickly as possible.”
After hanging up, Maya stared out the window, feeling something inside her finally die. Not sadness, not anger–just very last feeling she’d ever had for Camden, gone.
