Lyla rambled on and on with a long tirade. Simply put, shet believed I was the one who caused her downfall. Her child had been aborted by Kyson too. She thought I should pay the price.
Once she got the money, the first thing she’d do was kill me, then take the money and flee the country with Kyson to live happily ever after.
I didn’t know what Kyson had promised Lyla, but she ended up bursting into laughter.
Afraid she might actually lose it and kill me early, I kept flattering her:
“Yes, you two will definitely live better and better. I’ve lost to you in this lifetime, I’m so envious of you! Lyla, you’re the real winner. Your husband loves you so much, and you have money
too.”
Kyson had really messed with her head – she actually believed my words and looked quite pleased with herself.
When she sneered, she accidentally pulled at the wound on her lip from yesterday’s beating by Kyson, grimacing in pain.
Just as I was calculating in my mind how much longer I’d have to stay in this hellhole, the roar of a car engine came from outside.

“Kyson! I’ve brought the money you wanted! Where’s Helen? I want to see her unharmed!”
Maybe when people are vulnerable, their emotions become very sensitive. The moment I heard his voice, tears betrayed me and streamed down my face.
Afraid he wouldn’t get the money, Kyson dragged me up to the rooftop to meet Owen face to face.
We stood at different heights, gazing at each other from afar.
It had only been a short day since we’d seen each other, but I felt he’d lost a lot of weight. His face was covered with stubble, clearly not having taken care of himself.
I smiled bitterly, thinking: “What a helpless fool who can’t do anything without me.”
Owen coming alone for the exchange was Kyson’s condition, ast he feared police might be lying in ambush nearby.
Seeing I was safe and sound, Owen finally relaxed. He signaled for Kyson to release me. I knew this might be the last time we’d see each other face to face, but I still wanted to leave the best impression.
Suppressing the urge to cry, I forced myself to smile:

“Haven’t you been eating properly?”
Owen’s eyes reddened as he took a deep breath:
“I failed to protect you.”
I shook my head slightly:

“Meeting you in this lifetime has already been my blessing. The time I spent with you made me very happy. I’m just not lucky enough.”
After confirming the money was legitimate, Kyson burst into laughter:
“You really were willing to fork over a billion dollars to save this woman! How devoted of you!”
Owen didn’t want to waste words with him, coldly glancing at Lyla upstairs:
“I brought the money you wanted. You can let us go. now.”
Kyson revealed a meaningful smile:
“Of course! In business, we value integrity above all!”
Actually, I’d known since this morning that I wouldn’t be leaving, so I treated this as my final meeting with Owen in this life.

Sure enough, just as we turned around, gunshots suddenly rang out behind us!
But the bullet hit Owen! He had blocked that bullet for me!
I couldn’t hold back anymore and threw myself on him, crying in anguish at the sight of blood covering my hands:
“Are you crazy? You could die! Why did you do this?”
He just smiled slightly, using all his strength to brush the hair from my forehead:
“Don’t cry, I want you to live well…”
I nearly fainted. He coughed a few times and held me tight:
“If we can make it out alive, would you be willing to marry me?”
Upstairs, Lyla had already aimed her gun at us again. Neither of us could escape.
In life’s final moment, I nodded:
“I do!”
Bang!
Another gunshot, and the world fell silent.
