We finally separated after what felt like half an hour.
“I want to go up and see him,” I said. “See our son.”
He took my hand and led me upstairs, his voice low. “Leo is actually very wary of strangers. He looks well- behaved, but he only lets a few people get close.”

“But I think he knew you were his mother. He wasn’t wary of you at all.”
I told Damian, “I actually met him before I met you.”
A small smile touched Damian’s lips. “I know. I went back and checked the security footage.”
Those years fighting the System must have made him terrifyingly vigilant and meticulous.

We stood by Leo’s bed. He was sleeping soundly, his head tilted to one side. I bent down and gently touched my lips to his forehead. As if sensing me, his little fingers, resting on the pillow, twitched.
We stayed by his side for a while as the sky outside began to lighten. I had talked with Damian the entire night.
I turned as if to leave. Damian’s reaction was instant. He grabbed my arm. “Where are you going?”
“Downstairs. I need to check on my patients.” Then I remembered. “And I need to see Logan. To talk about the divorce.”
A clear sliver of ice passed through Damian’s eyes. “You don’t need to see him again. The signed divorce papers will be delivered to you.” He wrapped an arm around my waist. “Don’t see him again.”
