Chapter 2
sterile white, casting an ethereal glow around him. He looked otherworldly, impossibly distant.
We stared at each other in silence, one above, one below.
This was the first time he had ever looked at me with such intensity. His gaze was deep, heavy, as if he were trying to see past my skin, past my bones, and into my very soul.
Finally, I couldn’t bear it anymore. I gripped the railing beside me for support. “Are you alright?” I managed to ask. I meant his health.
But Damian didn’t speak.
I swallowed against a dry throat, about to search for another topic, when I saw him move.
He took a step, then another, descending the stairs.
He was coming toward me.
