Perhaps from crying so long, his little body was growing warm with fever. I gently patted his back, my cheek brushing against his hot one. He nestled into my shoulder, his sobs gradually quieting to soft whimpers. His voice was raw. I had to lean in close to hear him calling for his daddy.
He murmured “Daddy” a few times, then his calls shifted to “Mommy.”

The small, hoarse voice was right by my ear. I watched another tear escape the corner of his eye, and m heart ached with a pain I couldn’t name. I held him tighter, whispering, “It’s okay. Daddy will be here soon.”
He must have been exhausted. He stayed tucked against my shoulder, murmuring “Daddy” and “Mommy” for another ten minutes. Then, his eyelashes drooped, and he finally fell asleep.
The man in front of me had been watching my every move. The second the child’s breathing evened out, he took him back from my arms.
My arms suddenly felt empty, the warmth and weight gone.
The intimidating man’s face held a rare hint of apology. “It’s not that I don’t trust you doctors,” he said, looki ng down at the sleeping boy. “But he’s our boss’s entire world. We can’t afford to be careless for a single second.”
“You were right. On this floor alone, there are six of us guards watching him.” He added, “Our boss takes him everywhere.” He glanced around the room, as if to prove his point. Even in a hospital, in the middle of the night, Damian had brought his son with him.
