The old woman looked at Nathan,her gaze a weary mix of weariness and disappointment.
“Do you realize that the day I saw you faint,I almost thought I lost you too.“Her voice was soft,but the words pressed on her heart,“I’m too old to see all the turmoil. I thought you could hold the family together, but tell me what you’ve done? You drove the family to the edge and now you come to me and say you were wrong?”
Nathan dropped to his knees,voice trembling.“It was all my fault.I realized it too late…how much Laurie meant to me.I’ll fix it…I swear I’ll make it right to her.”
A flicker of emotion passed through her eyes,but she only sighed long and deeply,then turned away.“Do whatever you want.”
“If you still want to find her,then go. I’m tired, Nathan.“She closed her eyes. “This time…I’m too old.”
She didn’t want to meddle in the younger generation’s mess. Every blow Nathan had taken pained
her.
This bastard keeps thinking about Laurissa even after that harsh beating!What more can I say?
Nathan’s throat closed tight. He couldn’t say another word. He could only nod over and over again.
“I’ll go find her.“Then Nathan ran almost the whole way after he left the room. Even though he was wounded,he couldn’t care less. All he thought about was where Laurie was.
He had just made it to the hospital lobby when he saw the familiar figure.
I was wearing an apricot–colored trench coat,with a cold face. The man who was standing next to me was saying something to me with his head down.
It was Collins!
Nathan’s vision went dark. Without a second thought,he stormed toward us and grabbed my
wrist.
“Laurie!”
His voice cracked with emotion.“You’re finally…here.”
I was stunned and subconsciously tried to withdraw my hand,but he held it firmly.
‘I…I was wrong. It was all my fault.“Nathan’s eyes were bloodshot,his voice was low and urgent.“I’ve already kicked Alicia out. I’ll take care of the child situation too. Please, let’s not get divorced. Let’s start over,Laurie. I’ll let everything go and start again…”
He blamed himself to the point of being crazy and his eyes filled with undisguised regret.
It seemed he was at the point of insanity because of self–guilt. His eyes exuded undisguised
remorse.
“Say something…. “Nathan looked at me pleadingly. “Is it true that I really…don’t have any chance?”
After being confused for a long time,I finally spoke.My voice was as calm as ice, “Nathan. We’re already divorced.”
Instantly,Nathan looked as if his heart had been smashed by a hammer and his soul lost.

“No,no.“He shook his head,his eyes wild.“We haven’t gone to the City Hall yet to complete all the formalities.Are…are you actually unable to leave?”
I was stunned for a split second, only to remember that we were indeed still short of the last step of completing the registration formalities.
I glanced at my watch and replied coolly,“If you’re in a hurry,we can go now. The City Hall is stil open.”
Those words crushed Nathan more than any accusation could.
It was not that I could not let go,l just did not care anymore.
His lips trembled slightly,like words choked in his throat. He just stood silently there.
After a while,he raised his eyes.
“You came to the hospital…. “Suddenly, Nathan seemed to be electrocuted and grabbed my hand tightly,“What’s wrong? Are you sick?Is it your heart? Are you in pain again?”
