Chapter 5
After Toby calmed Tammy down and finished a series examination, it was already close to
dusk.
When he finally remembered me, my surgery had long been over.
When he arrived at the empty examination room and did not see me, he was not worried at
all.
It was not until he could not get through to my phone that he felt something was off.

“Toby, why hasn’t Stacy come back yet? Me and the baby are hungry. How about we go home first? She will be fine, she can take care of herself and come home later.”
Tammy clung to Toby’s arm, complaining and acting cute, as she usually did.
This time, Toby did not immediately follow her suggestion.
A sense of unease drove him to search the hospital. His steps stopped at the operating room
where I had just been.
“Stacy? She had her surgery here an hour ago.”
Toby’s face turned pale in an instant. His eyes were fixed on the yellow medical waste
disposal bag in the nurse’s hand. A shudder ran through his body without him being able to
stop it.
“Surgery? What surgery did she have?!”
“A miscarriage.”
Toby’s eyes widened in shock, and his legs went weak as he collapsed onto the floor.
The nurse looked him up and down, furrowing her brows.
“Who are you? From what I know, she does not have family or a partner, and she even

signed the surgery consent form herself.”
Toby stood frozen, as though he was struck by lightning..
“That was my child! The surgery was for my child… why… why would she…”
He stood up in a panic, gripping the nurse’s sleeve so tightly that the veins on his hand were clearly visible.
“Stacy! Where is she? Tell me where she is!”
The nurse furrowed her brow in even deeper disgust.
“You said the child was yours, didn’t you? How could you not even know where she is? Why are you asking strangers like us?”
“I–I…”
Toby’s eyes turned red, and he stumbled over his words before finally softening his tone, pleading.
“We have a misunderstanding. I need to talk to her. Please, just tell me where she is…”
“She left an hour ago.”
The nurse glanced over at Tammy, who was still clutching her baby bump nearby. She rolled her eyes before ignoring Toby completely.
An hour…
Toby had never felt fear like this before. He shrugged off Tammy’s attempt to stop him, frantically running out of the hospital.
I had already discarded the SIM card from my phone and was already on my way out.
Without the burden of my belly, I was much more agile and quick than before.
However, still recovering from the surgery, I was caught by Toby just as I was about to cross the border.

Leaving Tammy behind, he had gone mad after leaving the hospital, searching everywhere in the pack for any sign of me.
It was not until he returned to our house and saw that I had packed all my things and left, with only the surgery consent form left on the table, that he realized I had already planned to leave.
“No! Stacy, I won’t let you leave me!”
He ripped the surgery consent form to shreds furiously, transforming into a giant brown wolf. He ran from day to night, finally catching up with me just before I crossed the border.

His voice was hoarse as he glared at me. His eyes were red with fury as he slowly
approached me.
“Stacy! That was our child, we were both looking forward to his birth! Why did you do this? Why didn’t you even talk to me about it?”
I curled my lips into a cold, emotionless smile, and my eyes were completely devoid of
feeling.
“He is a poor child. No one but me was looking forward to his birth.”
“Even his father refuses to acknowledge his existence. If I had given birth to him, he would have just been bullied and called a bastard.”
Toby’s face turned pale. He tried to speak, to defend himself, but after a long time, no
words came out.
He did not know how to argue or explain.
He had never acknowledged the child.
Even his sister thought the child was a bastard.
“No…”
He covered his head in agony, collapsing helplessly onto the ground.

I stared at him, completely indifferent. There was not even the faintest stir of emotion
within me.
His regret and pain now were nothing compared to the suffering I had endured, or the suffering my child would have to face.
“Toby, you have no right to question me. The one who least wanted him, who least wanted him to be born, is you.”
“No matter how much you pretend to regret it, I know you don’t like this child, just like you don’t like me.”
“No, Stacy!”
He cried out in agony. His hands were tangled in his hair.

Tears streamed down from his reddened eyes as he looked at me. His gaze was filled with pleading and guilt.
“I love you. I love our child! I just… I just…”
His eyes darted, seemingly searching for an excuse, something to hold onto in order to
convince me.
However, after stuttering for what felt like forever, he still could not find the words.
